Imagination Stage Artistic leaders Janet Stanford and Kathryn Chase Bryer work to develop new scripts for the professional theatre (with 38 commissions and counting) to build a better cannon of intelligent work for young audiences...but there is something else missing....good scripts for young performers. That's when the Imagination Stage Education Team gets writing, and summertime is when they get the most creative.
Imagination Stage, a leader in theatre arts education, is thrilled to offer summer camps for ages 3.5 to 18 starting May 28, and running three full months, through August 31. Camps, ranging from 1 to 4 weeks in length, are offered in drama, musical theatre, dance, and filmmaking at 5 locations in the DC-metro area. Full descriptions and registration information is available at www.imaginationstage.org or by calling 301-961-6060.
Because of the concentrated amount of time teaching artists have with students in summer camp settings, summer is an excellent opportunity to perform a full show where kids can take what they've learned and translate it directly to the stage. However, there aren't a lot of scripts available that can accommodate a camp full of youngsters. Educator Julia Patterson, and author of one of this summer's scripts, explains, "Being a theatre educator and director of student productions, I can say that there is simply not enough appropriate and interesting work for large groups (30+) of student performers. I am so proud of Imagination Stage's initiative to constantly create thought-provoking and relevant plays for children in the elementary age range."
Registration can be done online at www.imaginationstage.org; over the phone at 301-280-1636; by fax at 301-718-8803; or in-person at our Bethesda location. Registration is ongoing through the summer, subject to availability.
