Two new exhibits will be on view at the Howard County Arts Council galleries beginning Monday, July 3, 2009. [trans] TEXTURE, in Gallery I, features works handmade from paper and paper pulp and No Boundaries, in Gallery II, features work by youth and adults with developmental disabilities.

[trans] TEXTURE, in Gallery I, welcomes artwork created with handmade paper or paper pulp. The medium is certainly the message in many of these pieces where the texture of the paper or paper pulp is an aesthetic factor in the overall work of art. The pieces range from prints to pulp paintings to sculpture and the work has tactile and corporeal qualities. The artists featured in this exhibit include Shannon Brock, Georgia Deal, Ellen Hill, Nnenna Okore and Gretchen Schermerhorn.

Gallery II provides a venue for the display and viewing of artwork created by persons with disabilities. The No Boundaries exhibit features pieces which were created in art classes run by the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the goal of these programs is to provide an opportunity for individuals with varying degrees of developmental disability to participate in an art class designed for self-expression, independence and relaxation.

There will be an exhibit reception July 22, 6-8 p.m., and an Open Mic Night beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of HCAC. Guests interested in performing in the Open Mic show should contact Wendy Meetze at deputydirector@hocoarts.org or sign-up to perform at the door. A ‘People's Choice' award will be chosen by the Open Mic audience. The reception is free and open to the public.

[trans] TEXTURE and No Boundaries will be on display through Friday, August 14, 2009. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. To learn more about these and other HCAC programs call 410-313-ARTS (2787).
