On May 7, 2010, the Howard County Arts Council opens two new exhibits, the Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2010 and Contrast & Symmetry.

2010 marks the 26th year of the Resident Visual Artists Exhibit at the Howard County Arts Council. In Gallery I, the exhibit features recent work created by artists who have studios at HCCA: James Adkins, Joan Bevelaqua, Carolyn Cates, Art Landerman, Diana Marta, Heidi Praff, Andrei Trach, Jamie Travers, Jereme Scott, Leora Smith, Thomasine Spore, Mary Jo Tydlacka, Xiaoxia (Airry) Zhang and David Zuccarini. The artists work in a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, and woodworking.

Contrast & Symmetry: Kristin Kowalski and Joseph Van Kerkhove. Gallery II includes two Ohio artists whose work explores complementary styles despite very different techniques. Artist Kristin Kowalski explores the power of form and surface while attacking contemporary issues in her ceramic sculpture. Printmaker Joseph Van Kerkhove uses unconventional methods, slicing and reassembling his prints and combining them with objects of everyday reality to create new images, to address the acts of creation and perception.

A free reception for both exhibits will be held on Thursday, June 17, from 6-8 p.m. The resident artists will open their studios for visitors from 7-8 p.m. An Open Mic Night event will also take place that evening from 6:30-8:30 in HCAC's black box theatre. The reception and Open Mic Night is in participation with the Columbia Festival of the Arts. Both exhibits run through June 19, 2010.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sunday 12 - 4 p.m. The Galleries are closed Memorial Day Monday, May 31, 2010. For more information about Howard County Arts Council programs and exhibits call 410-313-ARTS (2787) or visit www.hocoarts.org.
