Howard County Arts Council Celebrates 30th Anniversary and More, 3/26

Howard County's signature event, the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County Gala, will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at its new location, The Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College. This year's gala will mark the 30th Anniversary of the Howard County Arts Council! Come Celebrate with us and enjoy our reception including culinary delights from area restaurants and caterers, bid on a fabulous new piece at the silent auction with work by local artists, and enjoy performances throughout the Grand Hall and Art Lounge. At 8 p.m. the musical performances on the Main Stage begin; guests will be invited inside the Smith Theatre for the presentation of the 2010 Howie Awards and the Rising Star Competition, the 2011 Howard County Arts Council's Arts Scholarship Recipients will also be announced!

Elizabeth and Peter Horowitz will serve as Honorary Hosts of the 14th annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County. The Horowitzes will open the festivities by welcoming guests to the stunning arts wing at Howard Community College named in their honor. Bach and Robert Jeffrey, long-time Columbia residents and community leaders, will serve as Honorary Chairs for the Celebration of the Arts gala. Bach is a local dentist who enjoys painting and playing the piano. Bob is an arts enthusiast and accomplished financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. The Jeffreys will be recognized on stage and present one of the Howie Awards. Richard W. Story, CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority, will serve as Event Emcee.

The Rising Star Competition showcases ten young performing artists (ages 18-35) - living, working or studying in Howard County - vying for a no-strings-attached professional development award. The audience will choose a winner to receive $5,000.

The 2010 Howie Awards will be given out on the Main Stage at the Celebration of the Arts. The Howie Awards are presented annually to the Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Arts Educator, and Outstanding Business or Community Supporter of the Arts. Nominees are judged on their long-term contributions and the significant impact they have on the artistic life of Howard County
