Highwood's 16th Season sails ahead at full speed with a special engagement of Maury Yeston and Peter Stone's musical TITANIC - running from March 15 - 24, 2019 in downtown Silver Spring. This reinvented ensemble version of the show is brought to life by an exceptional cast of local 3rd through 12th grade actors, working on a historic, moving production led by a student-driven production team.
Sweeping the 1997 Tony Award leading categories for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score & more, TITANIC invites audiences to relive the tragic story of the 'unsinkable' ship and the hope, dreams, and ambitions of the passengers onboard. This ensemble-centric version - rooted in real-life characters and accounts of the ship's ill-fated maiden voyage - is notable for its use of merely 20 actors and beautiful piano orchestrations.
Highwood's TITANIC pushes the intimacy of the piece even further by providing a highly sensory, 4D musical experience - allowing you to feel more closely connected to the heightened emotions and action of the piece. The unique, expansive staging that audiences will experience helps distinguish the three different classes and utilizes sensory elements based on real aspects of the ship - from the smoky boiler rooms to the breezy promenade.
Embodying its mission of "building community through theatre,"the production team of student directors, stage managers, cast and designers has also worked to educate themselves on the historical truths surrounding the event. 9th grade actor Porter Orvetti comments on how this has shaped his acting experience: "The most interesting part about this process has been learning about the characters in the show - especially Mr. Andrews, the role I play. Instead of only making the character up myself, I can research him and learn who he was as a person, but also be able to make my own choices along the way."
TITANIC will run for a limited engagement at Highwood's home in downtown Silver Spring: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 15 - 17 and again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 22-24.
