Hallelujah! The Highwood Theatre's 16th Season veers off on a joyously irreverent course in a special production of David Javerbaum's An Act of God. The story is simple: God makes a grand return to earth to answer the burning questions of mankind - how else to do that than by rewriting the Ten Commandments? Prepare to experience the unearthly funny comedy in Highwood's singularly spectacular new production. Choosing from a pool of rotating actors - from Highwood Staff, students, and Board members to special guest artists - including Broadway talent Henry Gottfried (Waitress) - audiences will vote to determine who plays God and his loyal archangels at every performance.

Each year Highwood produces an Open Source Theatre Project that redefines a traditional night out at the theatre. Highlights from past seasons include a devised drama (RIOT) where live social media feeds directed the storyline, a dual adult and student cast production of an original musical by Nick Blaemire (SOON), and a musical co-production of Fame Jr. with Montgomery County's magnet performing arts school.

Now Highwood's 6th Annual Open Source Theatre Project, An Act of God premiered on Broadway in 2015 featuring Emmy and Golden Globe Winner Jim Parsons. This richly comedic play provides the perfect star vehicle for traditional theaters across the country - but has never before performed in a format of this kind. Grounded in the styles of stand-up and improv and supported by in-the-round staging, complete lighting/sound, sets, and costumes, this production adds a layer of unpredictability that makes it Highwood's most ambitious Open Source project to-date.

Artistic Director Matthew Nicola details what makes this a unique addition to the line of Open Source Projects: "Highwood's mission has always been rooted in community, and the opportunity presented itself to showcase the remarkable talent at the heart of our work - our diverse students, teachers, Board members, and artists. David Javerbaum's outrageous comedy offers a platform for our own star talent, while giving the audience the power to make it a memorable, one-of-a-kind experience. Special guest Henry Gottfried shares what every performer is thinking as April draws near: "I really have no idea what to expect. What did I sign up for? Am I going to regret this?"

An Act of God will run for a limited engagement at Highwood's home in downtown Silver Spring: Friday & Saturday April 5 - 6, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 12 - 14, and again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 26 - 28. Please visit www.thehighwoodtheatrel.org/tickets for the full roster of appearances.

The Highwood Theatre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the community together through theatre. Now in its 16th season, Highwood's guiding principle is "anyone can do theatre." Highwood was founded in 2004 and began executing its mission through seasons of professional quality theatre featuring all-student casts, design teams, and production staff. In 2013, in conjunction with its relocation to the heart of downtown Silver Spring, The Highwood Theatre expanded to more fully carry out its mission and develop innovative, engaging programming for artists of all ages through professional and student productions, classes, and programs in schools and for home schooled students.
