The 2006 nominees for the Greater Baltimore Theater Awards were announced today. Each year, local theatre patrons nominate productions for possible nominations. A committee then sees each nominated play and generates a list of nominees. 3 awards are given for Outstanding Play, Actress, Actor and Direction. One award is given for Scene Design, Costume Design and Experimental Production. All nominees must have been produced in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County or Howard County, and the cast must be comprised of at least 50% Maryland Residents in order to be eligible.
Everyman Theatre leads the pack with 12 nominations, including two for Outstanding Play, Opus and School for Scandal, 2 Outstanding Actor and Actress nods each (James Denvil, Bruce Nelson, Megan Anderson and Deborah Hazlett), and 3 for Outstanding Direction (Donald Hicken, Vincent Lancisi and John Vreek). Chesapeake Shakespeare Company and newcomer Toby's Dinner Theatre of Baltimore each had 5 nominations. CSC's production of King Lear nabbed three of the five – Outstanding Play, Outstanding Actress (Valerie Fenton) and Outstanding Costume Design (Kristina Lambdin). Toby's production of Ragtime got four of the five – Outstanding Play, Outstanding Direction (Toby Orenstein and Daniel McDonald), Outstanding Actress (Nancy Asendorf) and Outstanding Costumes (Larry Munsey). Mobtown's production of The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? got four nominations, including Outstanding Play, Direction (new Artistic Director, Alex Willis), Actor (Michael Sullivan) and Actress (Vickie Margolis).
Other multiple nominees include Audrey Herman's Spotlighters Theatre, with 3 nominations, all for Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train, including Outstanding Play, Actor (Carlos del Valle) and Director (Barry Feinstein), and RepStage, also with 3 nominations – 2 for Hamlet (Actor Karl Miller and Director Kasi Campbell) and one for TinTypes (Set design by Daniel Ettinger). Run of the Mill Theatre garnered 2 nods for Variations on Fear. That play was nominated as both Outstanding Play and Outstanding Experimental Production. Fells Point Corner Theatre was also nominated for 2 awards, both for their production of Sunday in the Park with George (Outstanding Actress, Santina Maiolatesi, and set design, Bush Greenbeck). Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Reddleman Theatre and Fluid Movement each were represented by one nomination a piece.
The winners will be announced on or near January 15, 2007. Congratulations to all of the nominees!
