Fells Point Corner Theatre presents TOP GIRLS by Caryl Churchill, in a production directed by Richard Barber.
When Marlene celebrates her promotion to the top of a London employment agency, she invites all of her heroines from art and history to join her: a fearless Victorian-era explorer, a Japanese Emperor's mistress turned Buddhist nun, a woman who may have indeed been the Pope, the Canterbury Tales' obedient Clerk's wife and a Flemish peasant-avenger who's been to Hell and back. Seamlessly entwining dark comedy and political critique, this innovative and powerful modern classic has never been more relevant.
After directing stints in Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Hangzhou, China, Top Girls marks Richard Barber's 6th directorial outing at Fells Point Corner Theatre. Over the past three years, he has directed Three Tall Women, Les Belles Soeurs and multiple shorts for the last three 10X10 ten-minute play festivals. In 2013, he directed Kate Bishop's Rare Affair, which won first place in the festival. When not directing at FPCT, Richard can be found teaching and advising the first-year students at the Maryland Institute College of Art
Featured in the cast are Helenmary Ball, Tessa Blische, Cori Dioquino, Terri Laurino, Amy Miller, Julie Press, Kara Turner, Annette Wasno, and Robin Zerbe. Baltimore playwright and activist, Kate Bishop, brings her dramaturgical talents to the production, marking her 4th FPCT collaboration with Barber.
