Everyman Theatre has announced the directors attached to each of its six productions for the upcoming 2013/14 season. Renowned and award-winning director Walter Dallas will be making his Everyman debut with BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK next spring. Susanna Gellert, hot off of her work with the MY AMERICA project at Centerstage, will both be making their Everyman Theatre debuts this season. Founding Artistic Director Vincent Lancisi will direct the first and last shows of the season - THE GLASS MENAGERIE and TRIBES, respectively. And returning to Everyman will be two audience favorites - celebrated directors Donald Hicken and Derek Goldman.
Internationally renowned director Walter Dallas will be making his Everyman debut with the Baltimore premiere of BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK (April 16 - May 11, 2014). Mr. Dallas has a wide-range of directorial experiences, including the world premieres of August Wilson's SEVEN GUITARS at the Goodman Theatre (named one of the Top Ten Best Theatre Events of 1995 by Time Magazine), Sam Kelley's PILL HILL at Yale Rep, and John Henry Redwood's THE OLD SETTLER at the McCarter and Long Wharf Theatres. In 1983, Mr. Dallas accepted the invitation to create the School of Theatre for the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He then assumed artistic leadership of Philadelphia's Freedom Theatre in 1992. During his tenure with Freedom, he worked with playwrights and artists such as August Wilson, James Baldwin, Denzel Washington, and Grover Washington, Jr. He has received New York's prestigious AUDELCO National Achievement Award for Excellence in Black Theatre and several Bronze Jubilee Awards for Outstanding Direction.
Susanna Gellert will be making her Everyman debut as director of this winter's CRIMES OF THE HEART (January 8 - February 2, 2014). Ms. Gellert produced the multimedia presentation of MY AMERICA for Centerstage last spring. Her extensive resume also includes directorial work with the New York Music Theatre Festival, New York International Fringe Festival, Lincoln Center's Director's Lab, Centerstage and assistant directing at the McCarter Theater. Ms. Gellert is also a member of Wingspace Collective, a group of artists committed to finding new forms of collaboration in theatrical design. She is a graduate of Yale School of Drama with an MFA in Directing.
Founding Artistic Director Vincent Lancisi will direct both the first and last productions of the 2013/14 Season. The first production is THE GLASS MENAGERIE by America's beloved playwright Tennessee Williams. The show has already been extended for an extra week and will run from September 4 through October 6. Mr. Lancisi will direct the previously announced Resident Company Members Deborah Hazlett and Clinton Brandhagen as Amanda and Tom Wingfield, respectively. Matthew Schleigh and Sophie Hinderberger - both familiar faces to the Everyman stage - will round out the cast as the genetleman caller, Jim, and the fragile Laura Wingfield.
Mr. Lancisi will also direct the final production of the Season - the Baltimore premiere of TRIBES by Nina Raine (May 28 - June 22, 2014). Mr. Lancisi has directed over 35 productions at Everyman Theatre, including last season's inaugural production for the new Fayette Street theatre, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, and the final production of last season, the hilarious Restoration comedy, THE BEAUX' STRATEGEM. In addition to his work at Everyman, he has taught acting and directing at Towson University, Catholic University and University of Maryland. Mr. Lancisi holds a Master's Degree in Directing from The Catholic University of America.
The Baltimore premiere of RED (November 6 - December 1, 2013) will be directed by Everyman favorite Donald Hicken. Mr. Hicken directed the final show on Charles Street last season, the poignant comedy HEROES. Mr. Hicken is the chair of the theatre department at the Baltimore School for the Arts. He has directed numerous productions at Everyman, including OUR TOWN, I AMY MY OWN WIFE, THE TURN OF THE SCREW, and many more. Regionally, Mr. Hicken has worked with the Berkshire Theatre Festival, Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Rep Stage, and Roundhouse Theatre, which included the Helen Hayes award-winning co-production with Everyman for the 2000 production of THE GLASS MENAGERIE.
No stranger to Everyman Theatre, Derek Goldman will direct the early spring production of Ronald Harwood's THE DRESSER (February 26 - March 23, 2014). Mr. Goldman has directed THE BROTHERS SIZE, BLACKBIRD and SHIPWRECKED! at Everyman. Mr. Goldman is an award-winning stage director, playwright and adapter whose work has been seen throughout the country. He is Artistic Director of the Davis Performing Arts Center and Professor of Theater and Performance Studies at Georgetown University. He is also the Founding Artistic Director of the StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance in Chicago. His work has been seen at Arena Stage, Steppenwolf Theatre, Synetic Theater, Theater J, Forum Theater, Roundhouse Theater, the Folger Theater, Shakespeare Theatre and Syracuse Stage.
