BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS is Neil Simon's semi-autobiographical play, the first story in a trilogy. The time is September 1937 in Brighton Beach, a section of Brooklyn, New York. The central character, Eugene Morris Jerome, is a Polish-Jewish American teenager entering into puberty. He chronicles his experiences and his family, in this moving comedy. His life consists of baseball and dreaming of girls; while living with an over-worked father, an under-appreciated mother, his older and wiser brother, his asthmatic aunt, and her two daughters. The show received much success in its Broadway run, opening in 1983 and closing in 1986 after 1,299 performances.
