CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Director's Notes for Casting

I am looking for experienced actors who can sing and move well, and who have natural comic timing. Each character must be both real and stereotypically "fictional" at the same time - not an easy feat! Confidence, comfort onstage and a great sense of humor are most important. For this production, I am remaining open minded as regards age and casting: I am not necessarily looking to match the ages of the original cast - but will focus on talent and chemistry.

Man In Chair - Gifted, natural actor who can easily command the stage alone, and also allow an audience to love him. Gentle, hilariously obsessive, prone to flights of fancy, very good with language, and somehow a little bit ... sad.

Janet - A genuine triple threat! A star in every sense of the word, with an ego to match. She must be an excellent singer, dancer (need real versatility here) and comic actress.

Chaperone - A fearless character actress with a powerful voice. She is always at least a little bit "drowsy" (meaning tipsy!) and is hilariously unruffled by anything. A large comedic role with one HUGE anthem to be belted to the rafters! Excellent comic timing is crucial!

Aldolpho - A pseudo "latin lover" (neither latin nor a lover - "discuss"). Needs a very gifted comic actor who can sing with power and conviction.

Robert - A leading man who can sing (baritenor), tap (fairly well) and (gulp) rollerskate ?!? Should be attractive and poised (as were all movie stars of the 1920's / 30's) He's always posing for a picture, somewhere... (but NOT smug or smarmy, just cute)

George - The "best friend" : typically funny and adorable character man of the era. Think Mickey Rooney! Comic ability, must sing (baritenor) and tap very well!

Mrs Tottendale - A sweetly clueless/ditzy socialite with oodles of cash! She must be loveable and genuinely "vacant" - not an act! ( Georgia Engel ) Good singer and dancer would be nice, but a well-cast actress is ALL - IMPORTANT.

Underling - Mrs Tottendale's Valet / Butler / Confidant. Need an excellent comic actor who can play VERY competent, focused and "wound very tight" - hilariously controlled. (Good singer and dancer would be a plus, but not a deal-breaker)

Feldzeig - Broadway Producer: loud, smart, sneaky yet loveable. Need an excellent "straight-man" for numerous lightning fast comic scenes (vaudeville)

Kitty - Feldzeig's girlfriend and wanna-be starlet! Dumb... or maybe not so much?!? (Think Leslie Ann Warren in VICTOR/VICTORIA) Loud, funny character actress.

Gangster 1 & 2 - A vaudeville team of comics who "play" ineffective gangsters. They must sing very well (one must be a solid tenor) and they should dance well too! Must be adept at lightning fast comic dialogue. (Should be believable as brothers)

Trix - Important Cameo Role: Powerful belter and presence needed for a two-scene role. She appears briefly in the Opening and "saves the day" in the Finale!

Ensemble - Small but important group of talented actors who can sing and dance well. Probably 4 women and 2 men.
