DLC's Professional Training Program Teaching Young Artists Presents URINETOWN Image

Drama Learning Center's professional training company for emerging young artists will present Urinetown, the Musical this June. Urinetown is a sidesplitting sendup of greed, love, revolution (and musicals) in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is set in a town like any town (that you might find in a musical) where a terrible water shortage has let to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Urinetown won three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards. This musical satire with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis has stood the test of time since opening on Broadway in September 2001.

In light of the recent tragic flood in neighboring Ellicott City, MD, Drama Learning Center is using TYA's production of Urinetown as an opportunity to raise funds and gather donations of food and cleaning supplies for victims impacted by the flood. DLC will take donations of non-perishable ready-to-eat foods, Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner, bottled water, flashlights, as well as cash donations. Donated items will be passed along to the Howard County Food Bank and Community Action Council of Howard County while cash donations will be sent to Ellicott City Partnership. Each performance will feature interactive opportunities for audience members to make donations in exchange for a gift from Drama Learning Center. Giving back to the community is aligned with TYA's mission of teaching students to be mindful of topical social issues as they relate to the shows they perform.

Drama Learning Center's Professional Training Company, TYA (Teaching Young Artists), presents its Spring production of Urinetown, the Musical from June 9-16, 2018 at Drama Learning Center in Columbia. A select program available by audition only, the TYA program allows students to work in a professional theatre environment as they learn about all aspects of theatrical work. TYA has a strong history of bringing cutting-edge titles to local audiences. The group has previously mounted area premieres of Cry-Baby, Hands on a Hardbody, First Date, Carrie the Musical, GHOST the Musical, 13, Legally Blonde, and High School Musical. Urinetown continues TYA's 2017-2018 season, which began with Heathers the Musical - High School Edition this past January. The season will conclude with summer musical theatre intensive performances of Junie B. Jones - the Musical in July. This production continues TYA's long-standing tradition of producing professional contemporary musical theatre.

Urinetown, the Musical is presented by permission through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
