The Children's Theatre at Way Off Broadway has been a part of The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, a leader in the region's theater community and one of the area's premiere entertainment venues, since 1996 when it opened with an original production of Sleep Beauty. That was the beginning of what would become one of the most popular family entertainment spots in Frederick. To this day, the Children's Theatre at Way Off Broadway is the area's only children's lunch theater, offering a family-friendly meal before each show.

Kicking off the Children's Theatre's 18th season, with Tilly the Trickster, a show based on the book by Saturday Night Live star Molly Shannon. Tilly will open today, January 25th and run through April 5th.

Molly Shannon has created numerous unforgettable characters on Saturday Night Live and in movies such as Superstar and Never Been Kissed and now introduces young readers to her latest hilarious creation, Tilly the Trickster. Tilly is a mischievous girl who loves nothing more than causing a little trouble. From leaking cups to toothpaste-flavored cookies, Tilly has a trick for everyone: her mom, dad, brother, classmates, and even her teacher. But when the tables are turned and her family does some scheming of its own, will Tilly decide to change her trickster ways?

From 1996 until the end of 2011, all of the productions in the Children's Theatre were original adaptations of popular fairytales written specifically for Way Off Broadway. While the Children's Theatre had remained successful through that time, as the 2012 Season approached, the theatre's producers began examining ways to revitalize the Children's Theatre. With the 2012 Season, Way Off Broadway's Children's Theatre moved away from classic fairytales and began licensing shows with contemporary characters and stories from popular movies and books.

From Disney movies adapted for the stage like Cinderella and Aladdin to favorite children's books like Pinkalicious and Flat Stanley, the Children's Theatre at Way Off Broadway has ushered in a new era of family theatre in Frederick. This continues with the area premiere of Molly Shannon's Tilly the Trickster in January, followed by How I became a Pirate in the spring and Disney's Alice in Wonderland in the fall.

Tilly the Trickster has music and lyrics by Drew Fornarolo, a book by Jeremy Dobrish, and is based on the book by Molly Shannon. Way Off Broadway's production will be directed by Jordan B. Stocksdale and run from January 25 - April 5, 2014.

Children's Theatre performances are every Saturday afternoon and the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month, as well as select added weekday performances throughout the year. Tickets are $17 per person with birthday party packages also available.
