While Baltimore thaws out, Glass Mind Theatre Company is journeying back to the ice with its production of Antarctica by Carolyn Raship. Antarctica is a relatively new one-act play that has had runs in both the New York and San Francisco fringe scenes. This is its Baltimore premiere.
Roughly based on the Nordic story "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," Antarctica follows the journey of Winnie and Magda, high school best friends who travel to the Southern Pole after feeling bored and alienated by teenage life. This comedic, surreal one-act is both a coming of age story and a modern day fairy tale equipped with an enchanted bear, a snow queen and magic.
Each weekend of the show's run will include a theme night related to high school. April 16th there will be a Collection of High School Stories night. Audience members are invited to submit interesting stories from high school-be it a first love, the prom date that TOTALLY sucked, or - as per "Antarctica" - that "legendarily gory nosebleed!" before April 11th to submit@glassmindtheatre.com. Stories will be read after the show by GM associate artists.
May 1st and 2nd will be Glass Mind Art Class Showcase. Throughout the run, audience members will have the chance to sketch their inspirations from the show. During the Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2nd closing performances, the work will be showcased in Mobtown's lobby.
Antarctica will take place at the Mobtown Theatre, 3600 Clipper Mill Rd, Suite 114. The dates are April 16 17, 23 24, 30, and May 1 at 8:00pm, as well as 7:00pm Sunday performances April 25th and May 2nd. Admission is $10 and tickets may be purchased at brownpapertickets.com, or by going to www.glassmindtheatre.com.
