CCBC Catonsville Academic Theatre will perform BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL 8 p.m. March 23, 25-26; 1 p.m. March 24 and 10 a.m., March 25 in the Q Theatre at CCBC Catonsville, 800 South Rolling Road. The musical, with story and book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe, is based on the "bat boy" character created by The Weekly World News. BAT BOY has combined laughs, comedic horror, kitsch, a rock-inspired musical score and a surprising story about tolerance to achieve cult hit status.

Based on a story in supermarket tabloid, The Weekly World News, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature (Jordan Marsh of Baltimore), who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff (Yasha Langer of Owings Mills) brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker (James Baxter of Ellicott City). He is eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a "normal" boy by the veterinarian's wife, Meredith (Logan Burke of Pasadena), and teenage daughter, Shelley (Lauren Brooks of Halethorpe).

Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, they turn on him, led by the fearful Taylor siblings who first discover him (Naomi Steven of Catonsville, Rebecca Butcher of Cockeysville and Kristiana Grace of Westminster) and their protective mother Mrs. Taylor (Nicki Seibert of Lutherville Timonium).

Other cast members are Debby Jennys of Halethorpe; Edwin Stagmer of Baltimore; Devin McKay of Baltimore City; and Denzel Edwards of Gwynn Oak.

The student production is directed by Professor of Theatre Carl Freundel, with Musical Direction by Tori Morse and choreography by Danielle Sten. Set and lighting designs are provided by Technical Director Maurice "Moe" Conn with costumes by James J. Fasching.

Performances take place 8 p.m. March 23, 25-26; 1 p.m. March 24 and 10 a.m., March 25 in the Q Building Theatre at CCBC Catonsville. Tickets, priced at $8 for general admission and $5 for seniors, students, CCBC faculty, staff and alumni, are available at the door, or in advance by calling the Box Office at 443-840-ARTS (2787). This show contains adult themes and situations.
