Review: MISERY at Live Theatre WorkshopNovember 4, 2024MISERY by William Goldman and based on the novel by Stephen King has made its mark at Live Theatre Workshop. This project is a breath of fresh air. Directed by Sabian Trout, with Assistant Direction by Shanna Brock, this play is both chilling and darkly humorous. MISERY, which is playing until November 10 on the Live Theatre Workshop Mainstage, offers up a talented cast and superb technical direction. It will send a shiver down your spine even though Halloween season is now over. Make no mistake, Halloween is very much alive at Live Theatre Workshop.
Review: ALEBRIJES at The Scoundrel And Scamp TheatreOctober 22, 2024Pinate has done an exceptional job creating a fantasy world built on darkly charming whimsy and wonder. I was often reminded of ALICE IN WONDERLAND while watching ALEBRIJES. Pinate fills the stage with fantastical imagery, much of it lit under jaw-droppingly beautiful blacklight.
Review: BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA at Invisible TheatreSeptember 5, 2024BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA is by far the most moving play I have seen in Tucson. It stars Dennis O'Dell as John and Hannah Turner as Caitlyn, both making their Invisible Theatre debuts. This was my first introduction to the play, written by Anna Ouyang Moench. I recommend going in cold if you are unfamiliar with this one. The impact of this play is strong and stays with you for a long time. Expertly directed by Gretchen Wirges, one of Tucson's finest directors, BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA is a profound piece.
Review: PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS at TAZ Theatre CompanyMay 17, 2024PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS is the latest offering from TAZ Theatre Company. It is a bold, astonishing, and urgent work that demands to be seen. Written by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Robert Encila, the play gives the audience a front row seat to the devastating effects of drug addiction. PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS features a knockout performance by Taigé Lauren as Emma. The play is surreal and minimalist in nature and does an effective job bringing the audience into Emma's world from beginning to end. And what a world it is!
