Just yesterday, 54 Below held a special press preview for its upcoming engagements, which included Tony Award nominee Chad Kimball (Memphis, The Civil War, Into the Woods), 2010 Bistro Award-winner Hilary Kole (Our Sinatra, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Rainbow Room), from "Sondheim Unplugged" Sarah Rice ('Johanna' in the original 1979 production of Sweeney Todd, The Fantasticks, A Little Night Music, Candide), compay members from Sing, Harlem, Sing! Today, we're featuring Mickey Rooney circa 1996. Working as a performer since he was a child, he was a superstar as a teenager for the films in which he played Andy Hardy, and he has had one of the longest careers of any actor, to date spanning 90 years actively making films in ten decades, from 1920s to 2010s. For a younger generation of fans, he gained international fame for his leading role as Henry Dailey in The Family Channel's The Adventures of the Black Stallion, as well as the film itself.

A long-standing opening night tradition on the Great White Way, the fabled Gypsy Robe is bestowed upon a veteran Broadway chorus member for each opening production. In what has now become a theatrical ritual, originating on Broadway 60 years ago, the latest receipient was BRING IT ON cast member Rod Harrelson at The St. James Theatre. Two-time Tony Award winner John Cullum (for Shenandoah and On the Twentieth Century; additional nominations for Urinetown, 110 in the Shade and On a Clear Day You…; Wilder at PH), Darren Pettie (This and Spatter Pattern at PH, Butley on Broadway, "Mad Men") and Sarah Sokolovic (Drama Desk Award nominee for The Shaggs at PH) will star in the New York premiere of DETROIT, a new play by Lisa D'Amour (2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist for this play, 2011 Steinberg Playwright Award winner for her body of work, Obie Award winner for Nita and Zita). Also in the cast are Oscar and Tony Award nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone, "The Office," On the Mountain at PH) and Emmy Award nominee David Schwimmer ("Friends," "Band of Brothers," PH debut). Directed by Obie Award winner Anne Kauffman (Maple and Vine at PH, The Thugs, Stunning, Naked Angels' This Wide Night), previews will begin Friday, August 24 at Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater as the first production of the theater company's new season. Donna Moore's Cougar the Musical will get its World Premiere this summer under the direction of Tony Award and Drama Desk Nominated director/choreographer Lynne Taylor- Corbett at St. Luke's Theatre (308 West 46th Street). Cougar the Musical will begin performances on Friday, August 10 and will open on Sunday, August 26 in an open ended run.
