Hello! My name is Leah and I'm a sophmore English and Theater Major at SUNY Oneonta. Theater is my life and always has been, yet I'm still discovering new things to love about it every single day. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have a voice here at Broadway World, and am beyond excited that I get to brag about my lovely theater department up here in central New York.

First Show:

Cats: I saw the revival on Broadway and it blew my mind. I had always loved the 1997 London recording and getting the chance to see the show live and revived was such a beautiful experience. I am a Cats the Musial lover forever and ever.

Favorite Show:

American Idiot: I saw a production of American Idiot at Cultural Arts Playhouse in Syosset, Long Island which completely rekindled and renewed my love for theater. I've been obsessed with the show, and the cast album ever since.

Favorite Stories:

  • Student Blog: Theater is Knowledge and Knowledge is Power - This is my first ever article as a student blogger! I spent a lot of time really working through, drafting, and polishing this work because it was my debut, and because I knew I wanted to anchor the rest of my pieces off of it.
  • Student Blog: I Fear Something's Rotten in The State of Denmark - Shakespeare is at the core intersection of both of my majors and boy do I love talking about it. Even though I love Shakespeare in a literary sense , I've struggled with the material in a theatrical manner and getting through that struggle was a big moment in my evolution as a performer.

In my experience, crying over Shakespeare does not yield a better understanding of the work itself, but I’m only 19, what do I know…I’ve tried blaming the Shakespeare, I’ve tried blaming myself. Neither option worked! So instead I acknowledged every feeling in my body, validated how it sat it my conscious, and moved towards doing the work.

It’s when you hit that point that things like theater start becoming a chore, as opposed to an active passionate full hearted choice that you make everyday. You’ll start losing your love for the simpler beautiful things in life because either you don’t have time for them anymore, or you’re too burnt out to see the magic of the world right in front of you.

Somewhere along the way I realized that learning is so uncomfortable because it means getting really up close and personal with the idea that we don’t know everything…..Make your dent in the universe and put your brain in its place because you deserve to do what makes your soul sing and what makes your world feel whole.

I will not limit my own understanding of the world around me by putting myself in a box that determines what knowledge I can, and cannot obtain. I will strive to learn all that I can so that I can create the meaningful types of theater that I want to create.
