BWW Blog: We Change Like the SeasonsMay 26, 2020You know that feeling you get when you find your community? Where you find those who share the same passions and loves as you do that you'd never found before? That's how I've felt being privileged enough to write for BroadwayWorld.
BWW Blog: Musical Theatre Books to Read During QuarantineApril 13, 2020One of my favorite activities is reading books and what better time to do that then right now when we're all stuck at home? Unfortunately, there are many theatre related activities we cannot participate in right now but one of the best ways we can learn more about our crafts and read about others in our fields is by reading about them. There are hundreds of Broadway related books, script writing and acting guides, memoirs by our favorite stars, and more! I thought I would share some of my favorites with you all to hopefully get you all back in the mindsets of creating art and learning about those who you look up to.
BWW Blog: Everyone's a Critic – Listen to YourselfFebruary 12, 2020This past weekend, I sat down and watched the Oscars. As I championed on some of my favorite films and those creative minds behind them, I reflected on those who were perhaps snubbed or didn't win in certain categories and it made me think about my own career and work as a creative individual. When you produce something which you love and pour your soul into, whether that be a story, a performance in a show, your photography, you never want to hear negative things about it.
BWW Blog: Why Award Shows Are ImportantJanuary 17, 2020The older I get, the more I hear from people how award shows aren't important and that they are far too political, or have a host that doesn't quite land the jokes like they should, or their favorite movies get snubbed. I agree with many of these, but not the fact that award shows aren't important. Your favorite films or shows and actors may not always get the recognition they deserve but as an entity, these award shows mean much more than handing someone a trophy.
BWW Blog: It's A New YearJanuary 2, 2020Resolutions. Plans. Discoveries. These are what people think of when a new year begins and I'm no exception. When a new year comes around, we want nothing more than to improve our lives through fitness, eating healthier, and getting more sleep, among the many mental changes we want to strive towards. However, I believe one of the most overlooked resolutions is seeing more theatre.
BWW Blog: Seeing Theatre SoloDecember 5, 2019When I was younger, I always thought I needed to go to an event with a family member or a friend or I would feel awkward and alone, but as I've gotten older I've realized that seeing a show by yourself can be enjoyable and liberating. A few years ago, I went to my first show by myself; Avenue Q Off-Broadway. It was probably one of the best shows you can possibly see by yourself too because of the message behind it.
BWW Blog: Plays That Will Change YouNovember 21, 2019My fall quarter at SCAD just ended last week and now I'm off until the beginning of January for my winter break. One of the classes I took as a dramatic writing major was playwriting and I got to thinking about some of my favorite plays that I would love to share with people and hopefully they can experience for themselves one day. You can also add these to your Christmas wish list if you so desire.
BWW Blog: Inspiration to Tell Your StoryNovember 13, 2019Where do you get inspiration from for your art? As a sophomore dramatic writing student, I decided to take three dramatic writing classes this quarter, which could be kind of ambitious, but I've loved the challenge. I've also enjoyed getting to create so many new stories and analyzing television shows, films, and plays throughout the quarter. The struggle to find inspiration for your art, especially as a writer, can be extremely difficult at times.
BWW Blog: SCAD Savannah Film Festival – The Passion for TheatreNovember 4, 2019This past week I got to experience my second film festival at SCAD. Being a dramatic writing major, screenwriting and playwriting, it is hugely important to me to get to not only see these incredible films that I may not get a chance to ever see in a theater or even on DVD but to get to hear from the honored guests about their creative journeys and their advice to upcoming actors, writers, directors, and more.
BWW Blog: Audience Callbacks & ExperimentationOctober 28, 2019Last Friday, I got to attend my first ever production of The Rocky Horror Show and I'm so appreciative that shows like this exist. It wasn't a shadow cast production, which means a cast performs in front of a screen showing the movie and the audience can have props that interact with the cast. It was a live production with set pieces and hilarious callbacks from the audience whenever the cast members would say certain lines.
BWW Blog: Elton John's Contribution to TheatreOctober 22, 2019Last week the book 'Me' was released by the legend Elton John and it got me thinking about Elton's contribution to musical theatre. His music and his generous personality have touched millions. His musical fantasy movie Rocketman, that came out earlier this year, based on his life is one of the greatest, in my opinion, films ever made. He has such a passion and love for everything he does and what he has given the magical world of musical theatre is just as extraordinary.
BWW Blog: The Blend of Musical Theatre and HorrorOctober 14, 2019College can be extremely stressful sometimes, especially after midterms, which I just experienced last week. However, there are many ways to destress and unwind due to the pressure and trials of school and watching musical films are a perfect way to do just that and what better time of the year to do that than around Halloween time? There are so many amazing Halloween and horror films and surprisingly there are also a lot of horror musicals that are simply fantastic.
BWW Blog: Musical Theatre on The Small ScreenOctober 7, 2019There are so many ways you can absorb theatre but one of the most important and underrated ways is through television. We all know about Glee and the success it had, but most people aren't aware of the other genius musical shows such as Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Galavant, and even Smash, which is probably the most well-known of the three.
BWW Blog: The Privilege of Stage DooringSeptember 30, 2019What is stage dooring? How do you stage door at a show? How should you behave at the stage door? These were questions I was thinking about as I visited New York this past weekend to see a few shows. I had the absolute privilege to see the Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, Aladdin, and Betrayal. Almost every single show I've ever seen on Broadway or Off-Broadway I've tried to stage door at. Stage dooring is a privilege, not a guarantee.
BWW Blog: Find Your GrailSeptember 25, 2019This past weekend I had the pleasure of seeing a production of Spamalot at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) Center for the Arts and it inspired me to discuss not only the importance of seeing theatre but also how there is so much theatre that is around you that you haven't yet discovered. This was my first time at this theatre, and it's about an hour and a half from Savannah. I was thrilled to learn there was another avenue to see more theatre that wasn't too far from where I lived.
BWW Blog: That Special FeelingSeptember 17, 2019Hello BroadwayWorld, it is such a pleasure to be given this opportunity to write a blog about college, theater, and all the different aspects of the arts. My name is Emily Bonifacio and I'm a sophomore at the Savannah College of Art and Design campus in Savannah.
