Hey guys! My name is Carly Galbreth, and I'm a rising sophomore at Wake Forest University. I'm double majoring in Theatre (BA) and Politics & International Affairs. Last summer, I was an electrics intern at a summer stock theater in New Hampshire. I love everything about theatre, and I know it will always remain a constant in my life. I'm so excited to share my experiences with the BroadwayWorld community!

First Show:

Aladdin (original cast!)

Favorite Show:

Come From Away! This is the first show I saw after Covid, and it reminded me why I love theatre. This show highlights people's stories and fosters love and hope, even in times of despair.

Favorite Stories:

  • The Power of 'Yes' - This article is a reflection on my freshman year of college. I think it's really important to reflect at the end of each year and see what went well and what didn't. In this case, I discovered that what seemed like a major setback at the time actually became my biggest blessing. I want to share this story with others to show that "failures" aren't always what they appear to be. Often, they're just redirections!
  • Student Blog: Breaking the Box - There is a misconception that a degree in theatre limits your career options to performing on Broadway or failing. The biggest gift my theatre program has given me thus far is showing me the vast array of potential careers my degree allows me to pursue. I hope this blog provides encouragement and guidance.
  • Student Blog: AZAD - Working on AZAD alongside Jared Mezzocchi and Sona Tatoyan opened my eyes to what creativity and collaboration can look like in theatre. The joy, love, and passion in the room each day of the project were awe-inspiring, and I want to share my experience!
  • Student Blog: DITL Summer Stock Theatre (Tech Week Version) - Before working as a summer stock intern, I had no idea what this life looked like. I wrote this blog post to show how much fun this position is, as well as how demanding it is.
  • Student Blog: Do-Re-Mi… H? - I loved doing the research for this blog post! It's always exciting to learn something new at the theatre, and I wanted to share my new knowledge!

The greatest beauty and biggest heartbreaks of life in theatre are the friends you make along the way. I have incredible friends around the country from various theatre contracts. Something about creating art together forges lifelong friendships unlike anything else. Unfortunately, the nature of theatre also necessitates constant goodbyes.

What’s the secret to saving almost $300 on theatre in one month? Experience it in Europe!! One of the beautiful things I’ve learned about Vienna is how cheap theatre is here! This month, I’ve seen two musicals, one opera, and two plays.

The most obvious difference was a lyric change in “Do-Re-Mi.” Instead of using solfege, they sang “C-D-E,” and each pneumonic was changed to reflect the note name (for example “D like the fast D-Tram”). My original shock grew when they sang 'H' after 'A.' This led me down a road of discovery, dating back to the time of Gregorian Chant.

One of the best parts about working in summer stock is the amount of shows that happen in a summer. At my internship, we produce five shows in 10 weeks. However, this schedule is demanding. The hardest part of each show cycle (and my favorite part) is the 72 hours from closing one show to opening the next. Here's what my schedule looks like!

One of the most frequent questions I was asked as a child was “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I used to have an immediate answer–from teacher to reporter to anyone famous–but as I aged, I dreaded the question. I loved so many things, and I was scared to commit to one career path. Now, I've come to find more peace in this uncertainty.

I’m so excited to share another DITL! This time, it’s the tech week version! Since this was the first tech of the summer, it's not quite as hectic as changeover (72 hours to go from one show to the next) will be, but it's a great intro to how professional tech functions! Here is what the Tuesday before we opened on Wednesday consisted of for me:

College opens many opportunities. Some of them are enriching, like performances and internships. Others, like cheating and using artificial intelligence, can jeopardize learning. The fear of punishment from professors and the university are threatening, but my greatest motivation against cheating is my desire to be prepared after graduation.

I obviously learn a lot about theatre from my theatre and music classes, but I’ve discovered the greatest beauty of a liberal arts education are the unexpected moments in which I experience theatre outside of the arts building. These experiences are helping me realize how applicable theatre is in all aspects of life. People are quick to criticize artistic and performance degrees, saying they produce false hopes that result in unemployment. However, I know my theatre degree will be relevant forever, even if I don’t pursue performing.

Juggling classes, rehearsals, work, and friendships can be very difficult in college, especially as a theatre major. In addition to the time I spend physically in classes, each demands significant work outside of class.
