A powerhouse of a performer like Sutton Foster comes along only once a generation or so - the last of her likes on these shores was undoubtedly grande dame EVITA diva Patti LuPone and, across the pond, original EVITA and CATS headliner and current FOLLIES revival star, Elaine Paige - and in her debut lead performance in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE more than ten years ago Ms. Foster set Broadway babies' hearts aflutter and tongues a-wagging with her steam train take on the title role and nabbed a well-earned Best Actress Tony Award for her considerable efforts. After that, starring roles in LITTLE WOMEN, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and SHREK followed - as well as a stupendous turn in the Encores! ANYONE CAN WHISTLE opposite Raul Esparza and Donna Murphy - but it was not until this very last season on Broadway that Sutton Foster truly received her shot to tap, strut, belt and, well, blow, in the old big Broadway Diva fashion. Make that even more to the point - in true Ethel Merman fashion. The new Tony on her mantle bespeaks Sutton's power in the theater, yet what about on the fresh new 2011 Broadway revival recording out this week on PS CLASSICS? And, what about her co-stars like Oscar-winner Joel Grey, Broadway stalwarts John McMartin and Adam Godley and the newer generation of Broadway hoofers like Colin Donnell, Jessica Stone and Laura Osnes? Come on aboard the S.S. Broadway World and find out for yourself!
Having appeared in more than seventy films so far in his distinguished career, multi-talented leading man Dermot Mulroney is playing one of strangest and most memorable characters of his career in the new independent comedy THE FAMILY TREE, which opens in select cities this weekend. Talking all aspects of shooting THE FAMILY TREE and working with co-stars Hope Davis, Jane Seymour, Chi McBride and fellow InDepth InterView participant Shad 'Bow Wow' Moss, Mulroney also sheds some light on his many beloved past roles onscreen - from MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING with Julia Roberts to GEORGIA RULE with Lindsay Lohan to KANSAS CITY directed by Robert Altman to ABOUT SCHMIDT with Jack Nicholson and Hope Davis to ZODIAC with Robert Downey, Jr. to YOUNG GUNS and far beyond. Additionally, Mulroney and I discuss his little-known musical abilities and his desire to appear on GLEE, the life of the working actor and what he is most remembered for by fans, and he also kindly clues us all in on the spate of supremely exciting new films he is currently working on or about to shoot - among them: Clint Eastwood‘s J. EDGAR starring Leonardo DiCaprio; as well as STOKER with Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode; ABDUCTION with Taylor Lautner; THE GREY with Liam Neeson; and, of course, his recent directorial debut, LOVE, WEDDING, MARRIAGE, starring Kellan Lutz and Mandy Moore. As if all of that were not enough, Mulroney also just finished shooting Emmy-winning GLEE star Chris Colfer's feature film screenwriting debut, STRUCK BY LIGHTNING, with fellow FAMILY TREE co-star Christina Hendricks, and he shares his experience shooting that this Summer and acting alongside Colfer in it. All of that and much, much more awaits!
Having racked up multiple top ten hits while still a mere teenager since he burst upon the music scene in 1999, songwriter and performer Shad Moss was once known as Lil Bow Wow and now goes by just Bow Wow, though he is building up a considerable enough film resume to consider now using only his Christian name to differentiate his various talents. Between LIKE MIKE, ROLL BOUNCE, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT, Tyler Perry's MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY most recently, and, now, his villainous new role in THE FAMILY TREE, Moss has transitioned from rapper to leading man in much the same way that he seamlessly moved from boy wonder to the man behind his own music at Cash Money Records. With news on his forthcoming album UNDERRATED featuring collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj, among others, as well as a look back at his past albums and appearances - such as his movie musical debut in MTV's CARMEN: A HIP-HOPERA co-starring Beyonce Knowles, Mekhi Pfeiffer and Mos Def; as well as his memorable stint on ENTOURAGE - Moss also shares his individual observations on how the music industry has changed and morphed in the last fifteen years since he started out as Jermaine Dupri's protégé, as well as all about his upcoming film thriller RECALLED and working with the cast, crew and creatives of THE FAMILY TREE - Hope Davis, Dermot Mulroney and Chi McBride included - and much, much more! THE FAMILY TREE opens in select cities today.
Today we are kicking off Broadway World's multi-part series of interviews with the stars of the 2011 Kennedy Center produced and Eric Schaeffer directed production of Stephen Sondheim & James Goldman's seminal showbiz musical, FOLLIES, currently in previews on Broadway at the Marquis Theater. Suave leading man Ron Raines sheds light on the central, pivotal role of Benjamin Stone and how he sees the character - in his youth, in his marriage, in the present and, also, in the future, post-Loveland and, even post-FOLLIES - as well as illuminates his interactions with the colorful array of stars he shares the stage with eight nights a week - chief among them: Bernadette Peters, Elaine Paige and Jan Maxwell! Additionally, we discuss what has changed in the transfer from Washington, D.C. to NYC, as well as examine the underlying message and story told in Ben's stunning musical triptych of 'The Road You Didn't Take', 'Too Many Mornings' and 'Live, Laugh, Love'. As if all that were not enough, Raines and I cast a glance back at his previous stage and screen work and discuss his solo albums, upcoming concert appearances and much, much more! Plus, first news of his essaying of the title role in SWEENEY TODD with Karen Ziemba in St. Louis next summer, directed by the helmer of the original Christopher Bond play that inspired Sondheim to compose the musical adaptation in the first place back in 1969.

Today we are talking to the man who makes all of the magic available to see in the Shakespeare's Globe Film Series actually happen onstage in the first place - such as this week's stunning showing of HENRY IV: Part 2 on August 18 -Shakespeare's Globe Artistic Director, Dominic Dromgoole. In addition to a thorough discussion of all aspects of the unprecedented series of performance captures that have taken place at Shakespeare's Globe so far - seven and counting - we also discuss many aspects of the Bard himself and what productions like HENRY IV: Parts 1 & 2 - both of which he directed - have to say to a twenty-first century audience. Besides that, Dromgoole sheds some light on some of the most memorable moments of his tenure at the Globe, as well as sharing his individual insight into everything from GLEE to Chekhov and, of course, we dissect a number of Shakespeare's most instructive, innovative and unforgettable scenes from many of his finest histories and latter plays, with a focus on HENRY IV and the future for the Shakespeare's Globe Film Series.
Today we continue our series of conversations with the stars of DROP DEAD DIVA with a special guest on all three seasons of the show, portraying the essential character of Jane's biological mother, Elaine Bingum, and a Tony-winning Broadway leading lady in her own right - the hilarious and accomplished stage and screen veteran, Faith Prince.
Broadway leading lady, Fosse featured player and, now, the star of the new Fringe Festival play SAMMY GETS MUGGED!, gypsy phenomenon Stephanie Pope Caffey has lit up Broadway stages for almost thirty years - especially memorable for her dance-heavy roles in Bob Fosse's BIG DEAL, SWEET CHARITY, DANCIN‘, CHICAGO and the Tony-winning revue FOSSE itself. We also discuss working with four other legendary directors on four classic shows in the interim - JELLY'S LAST JAM directed by George C. Wolfe, THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES directed by Tommy Tune, the hit revival of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM directed by Jerry Zaks and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN directed by Hal Prince (with choreography by Rob Marshall) - and far beyond. These days, Stephanie operates one of the premiere Bikram yoga studios in the country, Bikram Yoga East Harlem, and she evocatively illustrates how that is a continuation of her dance work and how beneficial the practice has been to her life. Additionally, in this career-spanning conversation we analyze the life of a gypsy dancer and what it takes to make it and rise to the top of the ranks in the best corps on Broadway, then and now - and, all applicable anecdotes that arise along the way, of course (and even some surprises). Plus, Stephanie shares all about her role in SAMMY GETS MUGGED! and reveals what drew her to the project, what to expect from the new drama/comedy, what her character is like and much, much more!
On August 18, Fathom Entertainment continues their unprecedented live stage-on-film series begun earlier this summer - in the form of movie theater showings of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR and HENRY IV: Part 1 in June and July, respectively - with Dominic Dromgoole's conclusion of the epic Shakespearean historical saga featuring the most beloved character in the entire canon, Falstaff - Shakespeare's Globe new production of HENRY IV: Part 2. For those who were lucky enough to witness the first part of HENRY IV last month, you are most assuredly intimately familiar with the sumptuously detailed and microscopically sensitive production on view and how sensitively it has been captured in these stupendous HD movie theater showings, and, HENRY IV: Part 2, I am glad to report, is much more of the same - and with even bigger stakes and higher drama!
Only once in a lifetime does a talent like hers arise and only one in a billion of us ascends to this level of legendary as far as history is concerned - yet, here with an anomalous, unique new album to go with the seventy that have come before it is the voice of a generation, Barbra Streisand.
Today we are talking to DROP DEAD DIVA guest star Sharon Lawrence and discussing her long-awaited return to the series as Bobbie Dobkins in Sunday's "Mother's Day" episode as well as taking a look at her long and varied film and theater career with thoughts on everything from CABARET and CHICAGO onstage to DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, LAW & ORDER: SVU, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM on the small screen and the new Theresa Rebeck play she stars in opening next month at the Mark Taper Forum in LA, POOR BEHAVIOR and much, much more! Over the course of the next several weeks, we are going to be taking an extensive look at the sights and sounds both onscreen and onset of the hit TV dramedy series DROP DEAD DIVA - new episodes airing Sunday nights at 9 PM on Lifetime - featuring exclusive interviews with the leading lady divas and dashing supporting men on the LA-based supernatural legal series. Featuring a memorable collection of musical performances and Broadway guest stars over the years - Paula Abdul, Rosie O'Donnell, Delta Burke and many more included - DROP DEAD DIVA is the quintessential TV series for Broadway babies looking for some laughs and levity - the latter available in many more ways than one, given the show's heavenly aspirations. DROP DEAD DIVA centers on a legal eagle named Jane whose body acts as the means for the indomitable spirit of a model, Deb, who loses her life, to make a second chance and how the girl inside must learn to adjust to looking like the woman on the outside that she is now. In other words, a model finds out what it means to look like everyone else, in a delightfully quirky twist of fate - and learns to be a lawyer, too. Season Three picks up with the cliffhanger car crash that closed last season in a dark and shocking way. What will Grayson remember of the conversation he had with Jane pre-crash? What will Jane do to save him? What about his engagement (to somebody else)? What will happen back at the office with Teri, Kim and Parker? What about Stacy and Fred? All these questions and many more will most assuredly be answered come Sunday night! Plus, there's always a musical number or two not too far off if you stay tuned - such as this week's BroadwayWorld exclusive world premiere of "Lean On Me" available here! Be sure to check back often because in the following weeks, we will also feature conversations with DROP DEAD DIVA stars Josh Henderson, Jackson Hurst, Ben Feldman and definitely stay tuned for next week's exclusive chat with featured guest star and Tony-winner, the one and only Faith Prince! Continuing the BRIDGING TV & THEATRE: DROP DEAD DIVA series, here is my extended conversation with DROP DEAD DIVA guest star Sharon Lawrence in which we discuss her many Broadway credits - CABARET, CHICAGO, ZORBA and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF included - as well as her extensive and varied theater career and acting alongside the likes of Cherry Jones, Marian Seldes and DROP DEAD DIVA guest star and fellow Broadway baby Faith Prince. Additionally, Ms. Lawrence shares her fascinating insights into the art of acting and the role of the actor in society as well as provides detailed insight into her own process and musical theatre versus straight drama - plus, comments on SMASH, GLEE, Weill, Brecht, feminism and much, much more!
Today we are talking to a singular literary talent who has written for Broadway, Hollywood, television and film, but, besides her Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway debut, ‘NIGHT MOTHER, which opened on Broadway in 1982, she is perhaps best known as the Tony-winning book-writer for two particularly beloved musicals of the last few decades: THE SECRET GARDEN and THE COLOR PURPLE. Generously covering her varied career writing for stage and screen, Ms. Norman and I discuss her process, her passions, her many projects old and new, and, most importantly, the two premieres she has looming large on the horizon in the next year, both coming after her highly successful collaboration with Jason Robert Brown on THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN symphonic suite (available now on PS Classics) and the recent world premiere of her new play, THE MASTER BUTCHERS SINGING CLUB, at the Guthrie Theater: in addition to writing the book for Jason Robert Brown's musical adaptation of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, we also discuss her newest project for Theater For Humans which is focused on international women's and children's issues and the manner in which she will tackle the hot button topics of human trafficking and enslavement in it. Additionally, we touch on the bumpy Broadway road of THE RED SHOES and working with Jule Styne, NY versus LA, musicals versus plays, GLEE, WEST SIDE STORY at the Hollywood Bowl, playwrighting pal Teresa Rebeck, as well as much, much more!
It is one of the most highly anticipated shows of the twenty-first century, if only because the most successful composer of all-time - and the man behind not one, but both of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history - Andrew Lloyd Webber, has taken perhaps the most beloved American film of all, THE WIZARD OF OZ, to the London stage and has outfitted it with a number of new songs and musical sequences from his own hand and brazenly titledit ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S THE WIZARD OF OZ. Rumors of a Broadway opening ring out as the show sells out every night in London. And the show itself? Well, it certainly lives up to the title - and then some! But, what about the cast album? Re-teaming with his Oscar-winning collaborator on JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and EVITA, Sir Tim Rice - who wrote THE LION KING and AIDA with Elton John in the interim, among many other musicals - and securing the most celebrated star of the stage in the modern age and the original Phantom in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA himself, Michael Crawford, as the Wizard, Lloyd Webber proceeded to procure a Dorothy through the nouveau means of a 2010 reality TV casting competition, OVER THE RAINBOW: THE SEARCH FOR DOROTHY, and he certainly found a more than acceptable heir to the mantle left by Judy Garland in the 1939 film version in newcomer Danielle Hope. So, now, here we are, with the lushly produced West End cast album starring Hope, Crawford and Hannah Waddingham as the Witch glistening in its jewel case before us, so should we be joyously jumping over the rainbow or singing the red shoes blues?
Today we are continuing our summer series on the TV shows featuring some of the brightest and best talent onscreen and onstage with the fourth part of BroadwayWorld's series on USA's new primetime network drama NECESSARY ROUGHNESS focusing on tonight's featured guest star Andrea Anders, who plays a recurring character on the freshman dramedy. Featuring an impressive assortment of players known for roles on screens large and small and stages far and wide, NECESSARY ROUGHNESS was created by Craig Shapiro and Liz Kruger and features Callie Thorne, Marc Blucas, Scott Cohen, Mehcad Brooks and Andrea Anders. The show centers on therapist Dr. Dani Santino (Thorne) and her suddenly crumbling domestic life coming in the wake of her husband's (Craig Bierko) newly discovered affair, just as she enters a new area of expertise in her field and starts taking on the clients of her career - chief among them being star quarterback TK (Brooks). Will her newfound romance with Matthew (Blucas) and his relationship to the team lead to a fumble? And who exactly is the shadowy figure behind the scenes, Nico (Cohen)? Plus, how will Dr. Santino balance the roles of therapist, mother and newly-single woman approaching her forties? NECESSARY ROUGHNESS goes in for a touchdown by bringing together issues from all sides and taking them on play-by-play - because, after all, as the tagline goes: 'Everyone has issues to tackle.' Touchdown!
Today we are talking to an international recording superstar who ushered in the new era of rock and roll with her songs and performance style in France in the early 1960s and created an unparalleled entertainment legacy reaching its apotheosis in 2010 with the release of her finest album to date, SOLEIL BLEU - the one and only celebrated chanteuse herself, Sylvie Vartan. Predominantly performing material from this stupendous recent album as well as from her vaunted back catalogue, Vartan will take the stage of Feinstein's At The Regency for two nights next week - Tuesday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 27, both at 8:30 PM. Be sure to take a listen to SOLEIL BLEU if you have not heard it and if you cannot manage to score a ticket to either of Sylvie's sold-out shows at Feinstein‘s, well... c'est la vie! In this career-spanning conversation we touch on working extensively with everyone from The Beatles to Carla Bruni to Charles Aznavour to what's next for her and much, much more! Playing to a gigantic arena for a three-week engagement sharing the stage with The Beatles themselves was Sylvie Vartan's entrée into the entertainment industry - and what an introduction! Bringing a sexy, swingin' style and hip dance moves to go along with her funky, rock n roll swagger and smoky vocals, Vartan virtually created the modern day pop/rock diva in the later mold of Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar and many of the great lady rock icons we have known since. Through countless stage shows, concert spectaculars, albums, films, television appearances and magazine cover stories, Vartan has firmly established herself as one of the foremost women in the French entertainment realm. Case in point: the First Lady of France herself, Carla Bruni, even contributed songs to Sylvie's newest album, the career-defining SOLEIL BLEU. Tacking on all of these topics as well as many more - most importantly: what we can expect to hear from her at Feinstein's next week and the charity closest to her heart - Vartan and I shed some light on her impossibly accomplished and fascinating career - such as selling 40 million records, committing 1200+ songs to record and giving more than 2500 onstage performances in her five-decade-spanning career - and, we also take a look ahead to her very bright future.
Today we are continuing our summer spotlight on the TV shows featuring some of the brightest and best talent onscreen and onstage with the third part of BroadwayWorld's series on USA's new primetime network drama NECESSARY ROUGHNESS focusing on leading player Mehcad Brooks, who essays the role of star football quarterback Terrance 'TK' King on the show. Touchdown! Charismatic and charming featured player on NECESSARY ROUGHNESS Mehcad Brooks is known to TV fans for arcs on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, TRUE BLOOD, MY GENERATION and THE DEEP END - and to Times Square visitors for his Calvin Klein ad - but it is with the role of Terrance 'TK' King on this new USA series that he has solidified his star status - and, in only a handful of episodes, at that, since the show just began. Brooks was generous enough to field some questions about his experiences on NECESSARY ROUGHNESS on and off the field and screen yesterday, as well as working with show creator Craig Shapiro - plus, creators and show runners on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and TRUE BLOOD, Marc Cherry and Alan Ball - in addition to illustrating his palpable rapport with cast-mates Callie Thorne, Marc Blucas and Scott Cohen, who are all also a part of this special summer series on BroadwayWorld.
