Acorn Productions Presents LIFTING ROCKS and A COMET'S TALE, 10/29October 13, 2010Acorn Productions continues the 2010/11 Studio Series of Friday Night Dramatic Readings in the Acorn Studio Theater with an evening featuring 2 one-act plays by Howard Rosenfield. Both plays are metaphorical in nature with strong influences from existential philosophy, absurdist drama, and the comedy of Laurel and Hardy. 'A Comet's Tale' begins when a failed suicide attempt lands Harry in Limbo, where events lead him to re-think his life-- and his choice. Both plays were developed by Rosenfield during sessions of 'Playwrights Lab,' a regular class taught by Acorn's Producing Director Michael Levine at the Acorn Acting Academy. As a result of script development done during the class, 'Lifting Rocks' was one of three one acts recently chosen for full production in January of 2011 at the Firehouse Theater Center in Newburyport, MA. focuses on how a summer job at a rock quarry changes a young man's view of work-- and of himself.

Alan Gilbert to Conduct Second Season of CONTACT!, 11/19October 13, 2010New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert will launch the second season of CONTACT!, the Orchestra's new-music series, leading Philharmonic musicians in concerts on Friday, November 19, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. at Peter Norton Symphony Space, and Saturday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m., at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The centerpiece of the program will be the World Premiere of Souvenir (in memoriam Gérard Grisey), a New York Philharmonic Commission by Magnus Lindberg, The Marie Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence, written as a tribute to his late teacher, followed by Grisey's own Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, performed by soprano Barbara Hannigan, who made her critically acclaimed New York Philharmonic debut last season as Gepopo in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre. The CONTACT! concerts, which are curated by Mr. Lindberg, began in the 2009-10 season as a showcase for emerging and established contemporary composers.
