BWW Review: GYPSY at Music Theatre Of ConnecticutSeptember 19, 2016With a minimalist set depicting an abandoned stage - brick wall, ladder, random set pieces, and a piano - Music Theatre of Connecticut begins its 30th season with the iconic musical, Gypsy. Written in 1959, Gypsy harnesses the dream-team creative talents of music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents, plus the original production was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. All of these legends combined certainly raises the bar for expectation, and therefore, this show can be a difficult one for any theatre to produce. All in all, MTC did a good job of presenting this whirlwind piece. You should go!
BWW Review: MY PARIS at Long Warf TheatreMay 18, 2016There's a bone disease called 'pycnodysostosis', but it's more commonly known as Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome. It means that the density of one's bones is irregular, and usually results in an abnormal growth of digits or appendages. In the case of the actual Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, it meant that his legs were shorter than normal, and his general stature was fragile.
BWW Features: Music Theatre of Connecticut - Thinking Outside the Black BoxSeptember 26, 2014Back in 2008, when I moved from my small New York City apartment to my 3 bedroom house on a half-acre in Norwalk, CT, I was both 'excited AND scared', to quote Little Red from Into the Woods. I was excited for the change, for the possibilities, and for the extra space, yet scared for the unknown, the new responsibilities, and the financial undertaking. I'm sure 'excited AND scared' sums up the feelings held by Kevin Connors and Jim Schilling when faced with their latest venture - moving Music Theatre of Connecticut from its quaint and cozy home in the basement of a Westport strip mall to the spacious and state-of-the-art surroundings at the Company's new location at 509 Westport Avenue in Norwalk, CT. However, 'excited' might be the dominant emotion.
