BWW Review: A LIFE IN THE THEATRE Provokes Thought and LaughterOctober 30, 2015A LIFE IN THE THEATRE at Terrific New Theatre is a very interesting look at life backstage. Written by David Mamet and first produced in 1977, this play holds up well and is definitely true to form for Mamet in that it leaves much open to your interpretation, something intelligent theatre goers will enjoy. Expertly directed and acted by some of BIrmingham's finest actors, it is a real treat.

BWW Review: IT AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES Is So Much MoreSeptember 24, 2015Right now in Birmingham you can see just about any kind of play you want. I have recently told you about NEXT FALL, an emotional and moving production, CLARK GABLE SLEPT HERE, a rowdy and irreverent play and last night I went to the Virginia Samford Theatre to see IT AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES, a collection of songs sung by some of the best voices you will hear anywhere.
BWW Review: CLARK GABLE SLEPT HERE Exposes Real TalentSeptember 21, 2015CLARK GABLE SLEPT HERE is irreverent, very mature themed and hilarious. It is a fast paced, short play that is full of action, surprises and shocking moments. Full of amazing local actors who are crisp, energetic and perfectly cast, this show is top notch.

BWW Review: SIDEWALK FILM FESTIVAL Showcases City and StateAugust 30, 2015If you are one of the few people, like me, who has never attended the Sidewalk Film Festival in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, then you and I have been missing out. This Saturday I headed out to check on one of Birmingham's gems and was amazed once again at the talent and creativity of the people of this area.
BWW Review: SHE KILLS MONSTERS Is UnexpectedAugust 14, 2015I have to say that this is not a show for everyone, but I liked it much more than I thought I would. It was funny, had some really nice acting and had a point to make. I am so glad that I was invited and made the time to see this interesting play.
BWW Reviews: STEEL MAGNOLIAS is Southern ClassicAugust 10, 2015STEEL MAGNOLIAS is the kind of script that makes you laugh and cry, no matter what and Montevallo Main Street Players' production is no exception. Well directed by Gwendolyn Treptow, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is a familiar, yet still entertaining, night of theatre. Seeing STEEL MAGNOLIAS is like spending the evening with old friends, comfortable and fun. Although it is the perfect ladies' night out, I heard plenty of men laughing too. You have one more weekend to see this fun show, August 14-16.
BWW Previews: NEST OF ANGELS Is UniqueAugust 5, 2015Rarely does it happen that a national or world premiere occurs in community theatre. However, as I previewed local summer theatre in June, there were actually several instances of that in Birmingham. Even more rare is the opportunity to stage a premiere with easy access to the playwright, even having the playwright in on casting and some rehearsals. Such is the case for South City's NEST OF ANGELS.
Written by Birmingham's own Alan Litsey, NEST OF ANGELS is a funny, interesting look at human interaction, set in the world of theatre.
BWW Visits: Spring Creek PROP Farms Has It AllJuly 30, 2015After spending a few hours exploring the Spring Creek PROP Farms, I am convinced there is no prop you can come up with that they don't have, and probably in multiples. Len Ward and Lysa Carter are helpful and their rent is reasonably priced.
BWW Reviews: MARY POPPINS Engages All AgesJuly 17, 2015MARY POPPINS is one of the most delightful plays I have seen in a while and I urge everyone, especially families with children of an age to enjoy a special night out, to take the time to go see this production. You will laugh, get teary eyed, and thoroughly enjoy every minute of it.
BWW Reviews: THE MUSIC MAN Makes MagicJune 19, 2015Going to see THE MUSIC MAN at Virginia Samford Theatre was exactly what I expected and wanted. A beautiful, well constructed set, colorful costumes, a huge cast of youngsters in the ensemble and fun singing and dancing. Do yourself a favor and go see THE MUSIC MAN. It will make you smile.
BWW Reviews: MR. WILL AND DUTCH Educates and EntertainsJune 13, 2015This weekend we have the rare treat of seeing a brand new play presented in our area that not only teaches us a lot about our history, but also thoroughly entertains. MR. WILL AND DUTCH: ALABAMA'S LEGENDARY BANKHEADS tell the story of Tallulah Bankhead (Dutch, a nickname given to her by her father, Mr. Will) and her family through the memories of her sister Eugenia. It is a delightful walk through time and reminds us of some of the best and worst of our state's past.
BWW Reviews: TRIBES Evokes Every EmotionJune 8, 2015This week I have seen a rock musical, a slapstick comedy and now, a British play that I am not sure I have the words to tell you about. I laughed, I was swept away by romance, I raged at betrayal, and was reminded of my own family. TRIBES is a must see!
