Larisa Amaya-Baron

Based in Japan, Larisa Amaya-Baron reports her stories and news in both English and Japanese to provide inclusiveness for the growing international audiences of Asia.

Larisa holds a Master’s Degree in Education, is a certified Voice Teacher, trained in Performing Arts Medicine, a practicing Adjudicator, and theatre business consultant. Along with her experience as a NYC Stage Manager, Larisa has been teaching theatre, voice, and acting in Japan for over a decade. She believes every dreamer deserves a chance to build their potential. So, in response to a group of her students who didn't have the means to go to New York to study, she created the only program in Japan which trains performers to succeed abroad.

Larisa founded International Stage Academy of Performing Arts (ISA) to bridge the international gap between the East and the West, providing opportunities where there aren’t any to study professional theatre. www.stagejapan.com

In addition to local students, her clients include corporations such as Universal Studios Japan, Sesame Street Japan, YBM Japan, and other production companies, as well as online travel magazines. She also collaborates with schools in Japan to integrate exciting theatre programs into their curriculum. Her most recent social project advocates for stronger actor's unions and equitable production contracts in Japan.

Representation and accessibility is important to Larisa and her students from Asia. As a regional editor for BroadwayWorld, it is her privilege to bring to hopeful readers the inspirational stories and interviews from both Japanese and touring celebrity directors and performers. Thank you for reading!

'I've had several Japanese people come up to me before and say, 'This is our story.' They were an older married couple, and I thought, 'Oh? This is a New York story, why do you say that?' And they said, 'Because, back in the late 50s early 60s, our villages were feuding, and they wouldn't allow us to marry. So there was this tension, but seeing the movie in 1961 made us say, 'Let's do it!' And we eloped.'

The most inspiring thing he told me was that Arts Education deserves support and respect from the government. The impact of theater on our youth is huge! 'When kids come to the theater, their phones are switched off. The lights go down. The performance is life and alive. The impact is huge.'
