The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $174,000 three-year playwright residency grant to Kansas City Repertory Theatre for Nathan Louis Jackson to join the Rep's artistic staff. The award is one of 14 Mellon residency grants made in December 2012. Jackson, an award-winning playwright and a native of Kansas City, Kansas, will begin his residency in July 2013.
Under General Director Speight Jenkins' 30 years of leadership, Seattle Opera has become known as "America's Bayreuth," drawing worldwide audiences to its acclaimed productions of all of Richard Wagner's major works, especially to the company's signature work, Wagner's ambitious four-opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. To date, opera-goers from 22 countries and all 50 states (plus the District of Columbia) have purchased tickets for Seattle Opera's 2013 Ring.
After eighty-six years, the Grand Theatre - home of The Road Company Theater Group, Inc. since 1976 - fell silent on May 14, 2010 when its roof collapsed, destroying the entire venue. This was a devastating tragedy for theater-goers throughout the Delaware Valley and it hit Southern New Jersey with significant impact. Now, after over two-and-a-half years of tireless hard work, fundraising, advocating, and numerous meetings with architects and contractors, the Grand has been rebuilt. A Grand Gala on February 16 will mark its official reopening. The event is being held in conjunction with the 2013 season opening production Hairspray, running February 14 - March 2. The Howard County Arts Council is now accepting attendee registration for its annual Cultural Arts Showcase, presented in partnership with the Recreation & Leisure Services Branch (RALS) of the Maryland Recreation & Parks Association. Fountain Gallery, representing artists with mental illness, today announced the upcoming exhibition Collaged Realities: Photography and Mixed Media, which will open with a Reception on January 10, 2013, 6-8pm and continue through March 6. This 30-work exhibition highlights over 15 collages by Peter Wooster, the esteemed designer of gardens, homes and public spaces. In 2006 he suffered a debilitating stroke that eventually led him to another form of communication: photo collage. Wooster is a Fountain Gallery Visiting Artist, who was selected by guest curator Patterson Sims to be shown along with three Fountain Gallery artists who employ collage and assemblage: Azure Bourne, Martin Cohen and Julio Mendoza. On Monday, January 14th at 9:30 three Wicked alumni will present Glitter and Be Green, an intimate cabaret at the Laurie Beechman Theater. The evening, starring Stefanie Brown, Lesley McKinnell, and Stephanie Torns, will feature plenty of trios, medleys and mash-ups, including many Stephen Schwartz tunes, musical theater classics, Disney favorites, and fun pop tunes.
Dance from the Heart returns to New York City' this month on Monday, January 28 and Tuesday, January 29, 2013 with shows at 6:30pm & 8:30pm each night at Cedar Lake Theater, 547 W. 26th Street in Manhattan's West Chelsea Historic District. The exciting benefit will feature performances by more than a dozen of the most diverse dancers, dance companies and choreographers working today. The Stratford Festival's box office opens to the public this Saturday, January 5, at 9 a.m., with an online advance sale beginning at noon on Friday. Facebook fans, who want to use the Festival's new social ticketing app will be able to purchase tickets as of 9 a.m. today. The Ruckus Theater and Tympanic Theatre announces casting for the world premiere of Brewed starting March 2, 2013 at Theater Wit in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. The script of Brewed is written by Ruckus Season 4 featured playwright Scott T. Barsotti and is directed by Chicago director Anna C. Bahow.
