Coming to the Durham Performing Arts Center from September 23rd-October 4th is the national touring production of the Tony and Grammy Award-Winning Broadway Hit, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical featuring Liam Tobin as Gerry Goffin. A role originated on Broadway by Jake Epstein.

Lovingly ripped off from the 1975 classic film Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Spamalot is a highly irreverent spoof of the quest of King Arthur and and his Knights of the roundtable.

Just as another Gershwin-based musical An American in Paris is currently playing big on Broadway, the triangle area was recently treated to a performance of the 1992 Tony-Winning Best Musical Crazy for You presented by the North Carolina Theatre Conservatory Master Summer Theatre Arts School.

Since the 2014-15 Season at the Durham Performing Arts Center has wrapped up, I decided to give you guys my top picks for what were some of the best (and the worst) productions I saw this past season. I've seen many quality productions within the past year, with one little exception.

Since the 2014-15 Season at North Carolina Theatre just wrapped up, I decided to give you guys my top picks for what were some of the best productions I saw this past season. I've seen many quality productions within the past year, but these are my top 3.

Set before 'the day the music died,' Buddy-The Buddy Holly Story tells the true story of rock star Buddy Holly's meteoric rise to fame in the late 1950s-before his life was cut short, along with Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, in a 1959 plane crash.

Loosely based on the fictitious life of Pippin the Hunchback, this musical tells the story of the young prince Pippin, Heir to the Frankish throne, who is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the un-extraordinary moments that happen every day.

Next to Normal is an original musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey that tells the story of a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness and the attempts to alleviate it have on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and the underbelly of suburban life.

Working Its Way Back to the Durham Performing Arts Center from April 7th-12th is the national touring production of the long-running Tony and Grammy Award-Winning smash, Jersey Boys featuring Matthew Dailey as Tommy DeVito, a role originated on Broadway by Tony Award-Winner Christian Hoff.

Coming to the Durham Performing Arts Center from March 10th-15th is the national touring production of the Tony Award-Winning hit Broadway musical Kinky Boots starring North Carolina native J. Harrison Ghee as Lola, a role originated on Broadway by Tony Award-Winner Billy Porter.

Coming to the Durham Performing Arts Center from February 17th-22th is the national touring production of Motown: The Musical featuring Reed Shannon in the roles of Young Berry Gordy, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson.

Based on material previously written by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, featuring a catalog of many recognizable songs by George and Ira Gershwin, Nice Work If You Can Get It tells the story of wealthy playboy Jimmy Winter, who meets rough female bootlegger Billie Bendix on the weekend of his wedding. Jimmy, who had been married three times before, is preparing to marry Eileen Evergreen, a self-obsessed modern dancer. Thinking that Jimmy and Eileen wouldl be out of town, Billie and her gang hide cases of alcohol in the basement of Jimmy's Long Island mansion. But when Jimmy, his wife-to-be and her prohibitionist family show up at the mansion for the wedding, Billie and her cohorts pose as servants, causing hijinks galore.

Based on the Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the musical tells the story of a little orphan with equal measures of pluck and positivity who charms everyone's hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. She is determined to find her parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, Annie escapes to the wondrous world of NYC, finds herself a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Focused on seventeen dancers auditioning for spots on the chorus of a Broadway show, A Chorus Line is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. It also provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers.
