BWW Reviews: Nostalgic HAPPY DAYS, THE MUSICAL Onstage at Roxy Regional TheatreJuly 14, 2012What with contemporary musical theater's artistic bent toward the nostalgic in recent years, it should come as no surprise that Happy Days, the ABC sitcom that painted an affectionate portrait of life in Milwaukee in the late 1950s/early 1960s, was adapted by the show's creator Garry Marshall and composer Paul Williams into a musical comedy.
BWW Reviews: Chaffin's Barn's THE ODD COUPLE Surprises and Entertains for a Midsummer TreatJuly 14, 2012In fact, Wilkinson's new and fresh version of The Odd Couple comes down to one thing: Casting. Sure, Oscar is still a slovenly and slobby, even if quick-witted, mess, and Felix is an effete fussbudget (and, if I were a psychologist, I could have a field day with all the subtext going on in that hot NYC apartment in the mid-1960s), but their friends seem different thanks to the director's choice of actor for each role.
BWW Interviews: It's Time For Recent Belmont University Grad MEGHAN GLOGOWER To Tackle THE NUTTY FIVEJuly 14, 2012Today's spotlight falls on one very special member of the cast, who just happens to be in every sense of the phrase "Nashville's own…" Meghan Glogower. Graduating from Belmont University's amazing musical theater program in early May, she auditioned for her first Broadway-bound show (aka The Nutty Professor Musical) and was cast! After whirlwind weeks of rehearsal in New York City, she's back in her adopted hometown-Megan's a native of Winter Haven, Florida, which means an invasion of Floridians is expected in the coming weeks, as well-dancing her butt off ahead of the show's opening.
BWW Interviews: RONNIE NELSON Comes Home to the South and Tackles THE NUTTY FIVEJuly 13, 2012Today's spotlight falls on Ronnie Nelson, who hails from Ammon, North Carolina, and plays Norm in the show. When you go to see The Nutty Professor, keep this is mind: Ronnie's the tall, good-looking guy among an ensemble filled with tall (and not-so-tall), good-looking guys-and he's played Nashville before (as part of the national tour of Cats) and he's got a hankering for some good ol' down-home biscuits and gravy, so I predict you might see him at the Loveless Cafe or Pancake Pantry while he's in town.
LEGALLY BLONDE's Matt Hunter Turns His Attention To THE FRIDAY FIVEJuly 13, 2012Today's spotlight falls upon Matthew Hayes Hunter, aka Matt Hunter, who is currently onstage in Legally Blonde the Musical at Woodbury's Arts Center of Cannon County. The show only runs through Saturday night, so you better make it snappy if you want to catch his bravura performance. Coming up, he'll be performing at The First Night Honors on Sunday, September 2, at The Troutt Theatre at Belmont University, and in late September he'll be appearing in the MTSU Theatre production of Guys and Dolls.

BWW Interviews: BLAIR GOLDBERG Tackles THE NUTTY FIVEJuly 12, 2012Today, our spotlight falls on Blair Goldberg, who's a member of The Nutty Professor's extraordinary ensemble. Get to know her here, then when you see her it won't feel quite so intrusive and nosey when you ask her about the time her haltar top came undone (oh, hell: she has haltar top experience! Give the woman the key to the city now, Mayor Dean…she's definitely one of us!)…
BWW Reviews: Nelson Delivers a Knock-out THE MUSIC MAN Led By Hancock and PendzickJuly 12, 2012But The Music Man? Come on, the classic Meredith Willson musical chestnut is as corny and all-American as you can possibly get (let's face it, Willson is the master of that particular genre of musical theater occupied by The Music Man and The Unsinkable Molly Brown-plus he wrote the Oscar-nominated score for William Wyler's The Little Foxes, which is one of my all-time favorite movies: "The grits didn't hold they heat"), it's pure hokum and there is absolutely nothing at all cynical about it. So why the heck does it make me respond with some emotional fervor?
Ralph Gabriel Helms Nashville Debut of Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA For Circle Players in AugustJuly 11, 2012Elton John's pop music influences will be readily apparent for audiences when they sit down at the Keeton Theatre for a performance of his Tony-Award-winning Broadway musical Aida, directed by Ralph Gabriel for Circle Players. Using Verdi's classic opera as a source, Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice have created an accessible musical inspired by Motown, dance music, reggae and gospel.

Polk Theatre to make final preparations for their first preview on July 24. BWW Reviews: LEGALLY BLONDE Wows Audiences at Woodbury's Arts Center of Cannon CountyJuly 8, 2012Ohmigod…ohmigod, you guys…Elle Woods-the sharp-as-a-tack, pink-clad heroine of movies and musical theater-is brought to life in Woodbury in an exuberant, if technically flawed, production of Legally Blonde, The Musical, onstage at The Arts Center of Cannon County through July 21. Directed by Mary Ellen Smith and choreographed by Maggie Richardson, Legally Blonde features a fresh-faced, youthful cast who bring the show's characters to the stage with an exhilarating sense of purpose that succeeds even despite an overly ambitious set design that slows down the plot's pacing.
BWW Reviews: Cook and Company Offer Fresh Look and Concept in Boiler Room Theatre's PIPPINJuly 7, 2012Led by the maniacally perfect Billy Ditty as the appropriately named "Leading Player," the 14-member ensemble deliver a thoroughly focused performance, never straying from the job at hand to endanger the success of the production. That focus is necessary, of course, given the intimate confines of the playing space and the amount of action that transpires on that postage stamp-sized stage. The action, in fact, never stops and choreographer Shepherd-obviously channeling the spirit and the nature of the master Fosse himself-gives the actors a lot to do. Quite frankly, this may be one of the best choreographed musicals ever mounted at the Boiler Room, so evocative is every movement and so expertly performed is every number.
