Guest Blogger: Sohaila Kapur Sohaila Kapur is a reputed writer, playwright, actress and director. Her maiden venture, a musical called Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan, premiered at the prestigious Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in 2002, It premiered in India in December 2008 as Mahim Junction and has performed at various venues in Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Dubai, Muscat, Kuala Lumpur, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Toronto & Vancouver. She has authored many plays. Sohaila is also an actress and has worked with some of television’s and Bollywood’s top talents.
Sohaila has directed several plays and has scripted, anchored and coordinated shows for Doordarshan as well worked for Canadian Television in Toronto. Sohaila was part of the Expert Committee for the first Ibsen Theatre Festival in Delhi and was part of the Expert Committee for Production Grants under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture for two years.

Theatre in India borrows heavily from folk stories and legends, which are given a contemporary twist. The messages contained in these classics are considered timeless and universal, just as Shakespear's works are regarded in the west. But there is another source from which our theatre borrows ...particularly theatre in North India, and that is Bollywood. It is common practice today to include original songs and dances from popular cinema or a slightly changed version to dodge the copyright act. Adding to this melee are the Indianised versions of Shakespear's plays, some of them commissioned by the Globe Theatre, Britain, that narrate the story through a Bollywood style song and dance routine.
