Curt Miner - Page 8

Curt Miner Curt Miner received his degree in theatre from Northern Arizona University and has been involved in theatre, educationally and professionally, for nearly 40 years now. He is currently Pastor of the United Church of Christ in San Luis Obispo, CA (www.sloucc.org), where he founded a theatre outreach ministry known as The God Is Still Speaking Players (check them out on Facebook). Their first production was the West Coast Premiere of a new play by Gordon Greene (one of Curt's former theatre professors from back at NAU) entitled "The Scopes Monkey Trial: What Really Happened" in October of 2008. Curt and his wife of 35 years, Linda, worked together as Director and Music Director on a production of "Godspell" June 2009. The group presented a readers' theatre production of Archibald MacLeish's Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning play "J.B." November 2009, participated in a collaborative effort with Bent Angel Productions in a staged reading of "12 Angry Men" in February 2010, presented "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" the first 2 weekends of September 2010, embarked upon another collaborative effort with Bent Angel Productions of a staged reading of Dylan Thomas' "Under Milk Wood" in November 2010, presented a readers' theatre production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" the first weekend this past March, mounted a production of "Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree" the first 2 weekends of September, and presented "Celebration In Song" - a musical variety show to benefit the work of GALA and PFLAG in November. A readers' theatre presentation (possibly "Our Town") or another musical revue will be presented this coming March, with "Snoopy" (sequel to YAGMCB) on the schedule for the first 2 weekends in September. When people ask him "Why a theatre outreach ministry?" Curt tells them "I have found that theatre is sometimes able to touch a person's heart and soul more deeply than the best crafted worship experience ... that's why."

As February begins, it looks as if a goodly amount of rather inhospitable weather is the order of the day for many parts of the country - but there's nothing inhospitable about our Central Coast live entertainment and theatre offerings!

Well, a series of winter storms has brought some fairly substantial rain to the Central Coast - but the rain certainly hasn't dampened the spirits of our area theatres which still have MUCH to offer by way of live entertainment for our audiences!

MID-MONTH THEATRE OPENINGS ON THE CALIFORNIA CENTRAL COAST
January 12, 2010

I don't know about you ... but I'm still wondering where Christmas and New Years went - and as I look at the calendar, I'm already seeing that Elvis' birthday has come and gone, and that the middle of the month will be upon us this weekend. But even though Elvis has 'left the building' again, so to speak (can you believe the King would have been 75 this year?!) - the theatres here on the California Central Coast haven't gone anywhere, and are anxious to bring you some quality live entertainment.

So as you contemplate celebrating New Years - why not include attending a show at one of our several area live theatre and entertainment establishments?

Holiday Shows Galore on the California Central Coast!
December 8, 2009

Well guess what? Winter has FINALLY arrived here on the California Central Coast! Now, what we call 'winter' is a bit different than what that word means in many other places. 'Winter' here means highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s, and rain. In some of the higher elevations to our north and south, they may even get some snow - but here on the heart of the Central Coast, it just gets a little cooler and wetter than usual, and not much more. But warm or cool, rain or shine - our theatres are open for business and eagerly awaiting your presence at one of their upcoming performances!

The selection is certainly diverse - and there are options to meet virtually every budget and taste!

Let Us Give Thanks for the Bounteous Theatre Offerings of the California Central Coast!
November 25, 2009

All right ... I give up on trying to figure out what's going on with the weather! Last week we had some coolish days with crisp, even brisk evening temps - and now they're saying we could see 80s again early this week, but be back into the 60s during the day and low 40s (maybe even upper 30s?!) at night by week's end! However, one thing I'm NOT giving up on is the wonderful theatre offerings that are to be found in plentiful supply here on the California Central Coast - come rain or come shine!

OK ... the middle of November has come and gone ... the highs are projected to be in the 60s with the lows in the high 30s/low 40s, with 'isolated showers possible' - could Fall weather patterns FINALLY be coming to the California Central Coast? MID-NOVEMBER THEATRE HAPPENINGS ON THE CALIFORNIA CENTRAL COAST
November 12, 2009

Well ... I just got back from Chicago where I had the honor of officiating at the wedding of a college buddy of our son's over the weekend. I also had the opportunity to visit the Ernest Hemingway Museum and Birth Home in Oak Park (did you know he wrote 2 plays - one full length one and a one-act?), had probably the best cinnamon rolls I've ever eaten at Ann Sather's in the City, as well as getting to attend the Sunday matinee of Young Frankenstein at the Cadillac Palace Theatre (THANKS for the great seats Amanda - FUN show!). But as much fun as the trip was, and as amazing as the weather was (70 in Chicago the second weekend in November?!) - it was good to get back to the Central Coast and all that's happening here!

Having recently returned from 2 weeks in the Midwest - I am reminded that in many parts of the country, this is harvest time when farmers are concerned about getting the crops out of the fields in between fall rains and before the first snows arrive. But here on the California Central Coast, the temperatures are still warm - and so is the hospitality in our numerous live theatre and performance venues!

Upon returning from MN & IA where I performed a couple of weddings, preached at a friend's ordination, and caught a matinee of the National Tour of 'Wicked,' the Central Coast was hammered by a storm that dropped several inches of rain, leaving thousands of households without power (erego the late posting this week). However - the shows must go on ... and so they shall!

October 5, 2009

In churches around the World, Sunday, October 4th, was World Communion Sunday - that one Sunday out of the year when churches set aside their theological and philosophical differences and celebrate that which they share in common ... what a novel idea! And up and down the Central Coast, theatres continue to celebrate what THEY have in common - a feast of quality live entertainment to fit every budget and taste!

September 28, 2009

Hard to believe that we bid farwell to September this week and welcome the beginning of October - the first full month of fall! Many areas of the country are experiencing fall colors and cooler temperatures - and even here on the California Central Coast, a change can be felt in the air. But regardless of the change of season in the weather - the seasons of our various area theatres continue to provide a steady diet and wide variety of quality live entertainment for your viewing pleasure!

And if you're not into either the church or football scene - thank God for the numerous Central Coast theatres that offer so many live performance alternatives as they launch or are already into their Fall Seasons!
