REVIEW: Union Avenue Opera Presents LakméAugust 25, 2009The Union Avenue Opera provided me with the chance to see the Missouri premiere of Lakmé by composer Léo Delibes (with a libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille). In sharp contrast to the romantic frivolity of Die Lustige Witwe, Lakmé is a tragic tale of star-crossed love set in the late 19th century during the British occupation of India. This work is filled with colorful and exotic characters, and those qualities are reflected in the music as well.
Review: Fox Theatre Presents A Spectacular Production Of MARY POPPINSAugust 16, 2009The touring production of MARY POPPINS that's currently gracing the stage of the Fox Theatre is 'practically perfect', featuring eye-popping special effects, a glorious set, and terrific performances that manage to capture the spirit of the 1964 Disney film, as well as the P.L. Travers books that inspired it. While some of the more beloved elements from the movie are noticeably absent, they've been replaced with sequences that are every bit as magical and engaging. This is a spectacular show that appeals to both children and adults.

Review: St. Louis Shakespeare Continues Season With Charming Production Of TWELFTH NIGHTAugust 10, 2009Though Shakespeare's comedies are generally a mixed bag, and often filled with rather bleak and tragic outcomes for some of the participants, TWELFTH NIGHT is, for the most part, one of his better comic plays. It's a funny little tale built around some familiar Shakespearean elements like: twins, shipwrecks, cases of mistaken identity, cross-dressing, etc. And, this amusing trifle receives a well performed and delightful staging in the latest production by St. Louis Shakespeare.
