Jorgensen Director Rodney Rock has announced that two new initiatives have been added the Jorgensen Outreach for Youth (JOY!) program for the 2010-2011 academic year that will greatly expand the program's outreach. Now in its tenth year, the program has been offering economically challenged children and young adults a variety of cultural experiences that capture their imagination, talent and dreams and enrich their lives.
Two Brooklyn opera companies, AMERICAN OPERA PROJECTS (AOP) and OPERA ON TAP, will present the fourth installment of its Opera Grows in Brooklyn series, an evening of three 30-minute opera scenes and songs. The program will feature mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer singing Absynth, a futuristic monodrama made up of newly-commissioned electronic songs from composers Nico Muhly, Andrew Staniland, and others; Clint Borzoni's new one-act opera Margot Alone in the Light, based on a Ray Bradbury short story; and Dreams of Pure Spirit: Songs of Tom Cipullo with the composer at the piano. The show will be held on Friday, April 16 at 8pm at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood.

The UConn Idol competition will culminate in a challenge round among the 11 finalists on Thursday, April 15, at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts in Storrs, sponsored by Coca-Cola. In this Victorian-era farce by Brandon Thomas, a quiet afternoon luncheon turns into a hilarious masquerade when college chums attempt to woo a pair of charming young ladies. After persuading a classmate to impersonate their missing aunt (and chaperone), mischief, high jinks and shenanigans ensue. Directed by associate artistic director Karen Lund, Charley's Aunt opens on May 14 and runs through June 12, with low-price previews on May 12 and 13, plus a pay-what-you-can performance on May 19.
