Horse Head Theatre Company is getting set in this hefty Houston heat to open an uplifting and inspiring new production this August. CHURCH, an original production by playwright Young Jean Lee, is expected to be an engaging way to invoke conversations and experiences of spirituality and identity in a theatrical context, rather than at your typical Sunday morning church service.

On July 27, Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company is set to bring a captivating new play, IN A WORD, written by Lauren Yee, to their stage. Premiered to glowing reviews in Yee's hometown of San Francisco, IN A WORD will continue to gain momentum in the Houston premiere.

On June 29, The Ensemble Theatre opened the final production for their celebratory 40th anniversary season with a bang, a belt, and a whole lotta sass! With its powerhouse vocalists, entertaining and sassy storytellers, and vast musical variation, SIMPLY SIMONE is anything but simple.

Stages Repertory Theatre opened their production of Jethro Compton's stage version of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance on May 24, and will continue to enthrall Houston audiences with their riveting tale of good versus evil, love, and revenge in the Wild West through June 25.

Houston's Alley Theatre will open a new musical comedy, FREAKY FRIDAY, on June 2 to will play through July 2. A co-production by La Jolla Playhouse, Cleveland Playhouse, and Alley Theatre, directed by Christopher Ashley, this wild classic has been translated into a contemporary musical comedy based on Mary Rodger's novel of the same name, with music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and   Brian Yorkey of Next to Normal and If/Then. I spoke with Jennifer Newberry, Houston native and avid performer about her performance past growing up in Houston and the striking similarity she has to her character in FREAKY FRIDAY, Gretchen.

4th Wall Theatre Company will open the Houston premiere of LOBBY HERO on May 12, playing through June 3. I spoke with one of the show's co-directors, Kim Tobin-Lehl, the other day, and gained perspective about the thought behind bringing LOBBY HERO to the 4th Wall stage and what it took to develop this production.
