Museum of the Moving Image to Open Redesigned Building 1/15July 8, 2010Astoria's Museum of the Moving Image will open its redesigned building on January 15, 2011, the New York Times reports. The redesigned museum, designed by Thomas Leeser, will feature a glass entrance, a grand staircase, and a video wall in the lobby, as well as a new theater (seating 264) and screening room (seating 68). Museum director Rochelle Slovin told the Times, 'I had always felt that a museum about the movies should have some sense of glamour. That is part of what we've now gotten from this project.' The museum's new design also includes three additional stories, increasing the building's square footage from 50,000 square feet to 97,700 square feet.
Dance New Amsterdam Faces EvictionJuly 8, 2010Manhattan dance space organization Dance New Amsterdam may be evicted because of its inability to pay rent, the New York Times reports. Dance New Amsterdam's executive director, Catherine Peila, told the Times that Dance New Amsterdam owes over half a million dollars in rent and added, 'With the high rent and the recession, we didn't earn enough money to pay the rent. The arts community should really be revved up: we serve 8,000 students, we employ 250 people a year and we moved to Lower Manhattan to revitalize the area.' Peila also told the Times that the organization hopes to meet with landlord Fram Realty and with cities agencies and to come to an agreement for lower rent.
Sadler's Wells to Present Pet Shop Boys' MOST INCREDIBLE THING 3/22July 6, 2010THE MOST INCREDIBLE THING, a ballet with music by the Pet Shop Boys, will premiere at London's Sadler's Wells on March 22, 2011, whatsonstage.com reports. The ballet, based on Hans Christian Anderson's story, tells of a quest to find 'the most incredible thing' in order to marry a princess, the report says. Javier de Frutos will direct and choreograph, and Ivan Putov will star. The production will run until March 26, and there will be a week of previews before the opening, the report says.
Hartford Stage Names Hana Sharif As Associate Artistic DirectorJuly 6, 2010Hana Sharif has been named associate artistic director of Hartford Stage, the Hartford Courant's Behind the Curtain blog reports. Sharif will succeed Jeremy B. Cohen, who is to become producing director of Minneapolis's The Playwrights Center, on August 9.

Actress Becki Newton ('Ugly Betty') is pregnant; Vernon Sanders, executive vice president of current programming, says that in the show's pilot, 'she plays a virgin, so we have to make adjustments to that.' In addition, actress Jordana Spiro is leaving the show, due to conflicts with her role on 'My Boys.' Cindy Chupack has also stepped now from her role as executive producer, although she will write for the show, USA Today reports.
Abbey Theatre to Bring Rickman in JOHN GABRIEL BORKMAN to NYC in '11July 2, 2010As previously reported on BroadwayWorld, Ireland's Abbey Theatre will present Ibsen's JOHN GABRIEL BORKMAN from October 6 to November 20 in a production starring Alan Rickman, Fiona Shaw, and Lindsay Duncan. The Theatre's official website has now announced that the production will be brought to New York in January 2011. A New York venue has yet to be announced.
