Working girl Marlene has organised a celebration in honour of her promotion to managing director of a London employment agency. She has gathered together half a dozen women from legend and history who have all led ambitious and adventurous lives. After multiple bottles of wine and brandy, all hell breaks loose, and we find out just how much each one of them has had to sacrifice in order to achieve "success“.
As the following the story of Marlene’s life unfolds; her co-workers, clients, and relatives, and the hard price she has had to pay for her own independence and career. Set in an England run by Margaret Thatcher, Top Girls takes an honest look at maternity, femininity, and ambition. With it's major themes, overlapping dialogue, and memorable characters Top Girls is one of the most important plays of modern British drama.
