For the first time in Melbourne, fortyfivedownstairs and New Zealand's national M?ori theatre company Taki Rua partner to present the Australian premiere of Michael James Manaia by John Broughton - described as "a poignant story about a New Zealand man who returns from the Vietnam War struggling with his culture and history."

fortyfivedownstairs Artistic Director Mary Lou Jelbart says of Michael James Manaia:

"I was tremendously impressed by the story, the production, and one of the most powerful and moving performances I have seen - I'm thrilled it is programmed as part of this year's Melbourne Festival."

Fresh from a critically acclaimed season at the New Zealand International Arts Festival, this new staging of Michael James Manaia is led by a powerhouse solo performance by Te Kohe Tuhaka, and directed by award-winning director Nathaniel Lees.

Michael James Manaia is a Taki Rua Production, presented by fortyfivedownstairs in association with the Melbourne Festival. This production has been supported by Creative New Zealand, the Sunraysia Foundation, and the fortyfivedownstairs private donor program. The production was originally co-produced by the New Zealand International Arts Festival 2012.
