Review: WE WILL ROCK YOU ON TOUR at Wiener Stadthalle ImageWE WILL ROCK YOU ON TOUR!

Welcome back to GAGA-Land, WE WILL ROCK YOU by QUEEN, and Ben Elton is back on tour with a new staging by Cornelius Baltus. WE WILL ROCK YOU went out to be a Hit after Opening Night back in 2002 at Londons Dominion Theatre. Over 15 million people have seen the Jukebox Musical filled with 24 of QUEEN's all-time greatest hits, the show's secret of success. Cornelius Baltus faced the challenge of getting the most out of Ben Elton's shallow story, and he made brilliant choices to maneuver Cast and the audience through the paper-thin plot. Compared to the first German production, the songs are now performed in English, one of the best choices made by the creative team. (They tried, they failed, they learned) Some things just don't work in any other than the original written language, and QUEEN songs are no exception. When there is music, the show is on fire ( to no surprise, because it's QUEEN), but in between, it feels like old chewing gum on the sole of your shoe. Anyway, nobody is interested in the story. Everybody is here for the ALL-TIME QUEEN classics like WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, I WANT IT ALL, and of course, the incomparable WE WILL ROCK YOU. Reaching that show's point, it feels more like a Rock concert than a Musical. If you don't mind being surrounded by people behaving like they are at a sing-a-long event, you might enjoy the Best Of QUEEN show. It will be loud and sometimes ear-splitting, but hey, that's Rock'n Roll baby.

With all the weaknesses of a Jukebox Musical, WE WILL ROCK YOU appeals to audiences worldwide, a Global ( Soft) Phenomenon. Philipp Büttner ( Galileo), Inga Krischke (Scaramouche), Linda Holmgren (Killer Queen), Gavin Turnbull ( Udo), Marina Maniglio ( Ozzy), and Vini Gomes ( Hell), together with an ambitious cast have nailed it on Opening Night. Standing ovations, frenetic applause ( stamp, clap, repeat), and loads of self-proclaimed singers in the audience, WE WILL ROCK YOU, almost like a real Rock Concert, almost.
