Dear diary, Corona is still dominating the world but some things are getting back to some sort of normal, slowly but constantly. I have to say it out loud what we all are feeling right now. Dear theatre, we bloody miss you. The excitement on the way to the theatre, the smell when we get into the building, the pure enjoyment of a live performance, and everything about it. We deeply miss it but there is a glimpse of light at the end of this tunnel. Robert Meyer, Viennas Volksoper Director set up 9 different concerts for the end of June for an audience of only 100. The concerts got sold out immediately.

Meyer and the Volksoper Ensemble are back in rehearsals right now for the Opening of SWEET CHARITY. It's Charity Hope Valentine, one of the most charming and heartwarming characters in Musical History ( some might say naive) to welcome us back into the theatre. A character with Hope as a middle name, seriously, it can't get any better than this. We got the chance to talk with Lisa Habermann, Viennas Charity about the show.
BWW.: You are playing Charity Hope Valentine in the Vienna production of Sweet Charity at the Volksoper Wien a role played by legends like Gwen Verdon or Shirley MacLaine. Have you got some inspiration from those Leading Ladies performances during your preparation?
Lisa Habermann: The role of Charity was played by the biggest names ins Musical Theatre. I got some inspiration from those amazing Leading Ladies during my preparation for the show, yes but I had to find those Charity glimpses inside of me. What's inside and ready to bring alive on stage, something that wants to be seen, something to bring it into the world. The Character (Charity Valentine Hope) is so beautiful to bring to life because she is full of love, hope, and empathy, loads of things that people nowadays are missing. Imagine Charity is stepping into a full crowded train during one of the usually busy and sometimes grey working days in the city, where everyone is minding his own business. Charity would be a colorful swirl of energy and lighten up everyone's day. When watching the show, you really want her to succeed, to find love, to get what she is searching for. A glimpse of her colorful, quirky, and almost outa worldly character, and if you want to you can fly with her.
BWW.: After the lights went out due to Covid19 it has been a challenging time for everyone. Seeing the theatres reopening again feels like an epiphany. You are going to bring back our beloved theatre with the Opening of Sweet Charity, from 1- 10, how excited are you right now?
Lisa Habermann: It's beautiful being back at work. I am so grateful that The VOLKSOPER put all the work together to make it happen even with all the terms and constrictions I really missed that energy that you can get from being at work again, from being creative with your colleagues, the creative team, everyone involved in the show. It's such an amazing feeling seeing what we already achieved together during the process. We are going to make people happy. Needless to say, that's one of the reasons why I love my job and why I am doing it with so much joy. We have a beautiful perspective, to reopen in Autumn. We are back at work and ready to go.
Thank you for your time, Lisa!
If you are looking for hope, visit the Volksoper in September and enjoy SWEET CHARITY's story. There is a golden sky at the end of the storm and we are getting closer. Stay safe and healthy!
