A night of joyful music takes flight, beginning with the irrepressible overture to Rossini’s La gazza ladra. The exuberance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.17, inspired by the call of the composer’s pet starling, is followed by Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques, which ingeniously uses orchestral instruments to replicate the calls of over 40 different bird species. The lush melodies of Brahms’ Symphony No.3 draw the program to a close.
