Between Lines by Kim Lawler is a series of aerial photographs taken in the Kimberley, far north Western Australia. This remote area is embedded with stories of Indigenous and non-Indigenous inhabitants and transitory visitors, and is scarred by multinational companies' resource development. Kim Lawler has lived in this region and her work is strongly influenced by the displacement of its peoples and the competing demands for natural resources. The extraordinary colour and beauty of these landscapes glow in these large scale pigment print photographs.
Elemental, new sculptural work from Joey North, is his second exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs. As in his first show, the works are created from recycled materials gleaned over many years from the beaches and broKen Down wharves of Port Phillip. Large in scale, powerful in impact, these works resonate with memories of their past life and function.
Both exhibitions run until Saturday 10 October
Fringe at fortyfivedownstairs
A Black Joy has been delighting and bemusing audiences since it opened on September 23. This wildly surreal and dark comedy by multi award winning young writer Declan Greene has a great cast of 7, with Ann Browning, Tom Considine and Ash Flanders making their first appearance here, and Chris Bunworth, Miriam Glaser, Carole Patullo and Megan Twycross making welcome returns. A multiplicity of genres; film noir, horror film and contemporary cult of 'celebrity' all make an appearance in this astonishing and occasionally horrifying fantasy world. (Warning: adult themes).
"Hilarious and crazy..... gutsy, credible performances in this flagrantly offensive and absurd play." Kate Herbert, Herald Sun.
Equally surreal, Everything will be OK, a miniature, tabletop puppet show created by Sayrah Lothian and Robert Reid, is just about the most exclusive show in town. Strictly limited to an audience of 12, Sayrah and Robert have utilised everything from tiny soft toys to ancient radios and sparkling Christmas decorations to create an absurd world with more than a kernel of truth and social and political comment.

Everything will be OK $20/15 9.15 Wednesday - Saturday

Coming Up in the Gallery:
Artists Cathy Drummond and Bill Hay return to fortyfivedownstairs with new exhibitions in the large and small galleries respectively.
Quintessential Melbourne artists Drummond and Hay document our urban lives, each in their unique way; the markers of our familiar places, the preoccupations of everyday life, both ordinary and singular.
Cathy Drummond's urban landscapes are Melbourne through and through; they are engaging cityscapes, full of small details of life and urban grunge.
Bill Hay's painted steel signs also speak very strongly of human habitation although some, such as the 'crossing crocodile' sign, are far from urban! Hay plays games with words in his hand created signs, configuring them in different ways in order to communicate meanings both humourous and serious.
Both exhibitions run October 13 - October 24
