The Metro Arts Galleries Presents 'Special Effects' by Stephen Russell August 11 through 28.

2010 Artist in Residence, Stephen Russell, communicates through his exploration of visual and cultural sign systems. Russell works in a multifaceted practice across multiple mediums, creating hybrid objects, videos, paintings, digital imagery and text.
While Russell's practice utilizes numerous mediums this exhibition will feature mostly object based work that reflects on the artist's interest in art history and the successes and failures of accessing this history through images. These ideas are unpacked using, for most part, a minimal formal language that functions to ease slippage into the aesthetics of corporate logo or modern product design.

Svenja Kratz's exhibition in Gallery 2 at Metro Arts has been drawn from her experiences during a three month residency at SymbioticA - The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts. Kratz' research during this residency was focused on the role that viral and bacterial DNA plays in human evolution. For the exhibition at Metro Arts the data generated will be used to develop a series of interrelated new media and fine arts works with a specific focus of the transformative
potential of viral and bacterial agents and possible influence in evolutionary processes.

The Metro Arts Galleries is located at 109 Edward Street, Brisbane.
