These summer school holidays, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC)'s premier children's program SummerSet, presents a wonderful array of shows the whole family is sure to enjoy from 12 December 2017 to 13 January 2018.
Emily Brown and the Thing kicks off SummerSet from 12 to 23 December 2017 in the Centre's newly refurbished Cremorne Theatre. Following a sell-out run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this enchanting show is sure to delight the youngest members of the audience in the first presentation of its work in Queensland. Based on the much-loved book by award winning duo, Cressida Cowell (author of How to Train Your Dragon) and Neal Layton, audiences 3+ will follow Emily Brown and her rabbit Stanley on their magical adventures to help the 'Thing' get to sleep. From Tall Stories (creators of The Gruffalo and The Snail and the Whale stage shows) don't miss this tale of bravery and adventure told through original music, beautiful puppetry, physical storytelling and lots of comedy.
Following the page to stage theme, and based on the hugely popular children's book by Andy Griffiths and illustrated by Terry Denton, the world premiere season of The 78-Storey Treehouse will open at the Playhouse, QPAC from 13 to 23 December 2017. The fourth book in the series to be expertly adapted into a stage play by Richard Tulloch will entertain audiences aged 6+, taking imaginations to even greater heights (another 65 levels to be precise), as it follows the sold-out presentation of The 13 Storey Treehouse at QPAC in April 2017.
Audiences aged 5+ will be catapulted into the world of circus and cabaret as The Funatorium: Mad Hatter's Tea Party descends on the Playhouse, QPAC from 3 to 13 January, 2018. Inspired by Lewis Carroll's classic tale Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this hilarious world of circus, acrobatics, singing and roller skates will feature all of the much-loved characters in a cabaret made for kids. This is one tea party you'd be mad to miss!
From 9 to 13 January, 2018, Brainiac Live! explodes into the Concert Hall, QPAC with an anarchic comic approach to science in tow. Based on the multi-award winning TV show, the audience can expect exploding dustbins, combusting microwaves and countless live daredevil stunts. Audiences 7+ are invited to strap on their safety googles and watch as the Brainiacs delve fearlessly into the mysteries of science - but don't try this at home! Children are also invited to put their detective skills to the test at the Brainiac Detective Academy. Limited spaces are available for these hands on workshops with the stars of Brainiac Live!
