To commemorate the Anzac Centenary, Arts Centre Melbourne with the Lemnos Gallipoli Project will present Women in War, a contemporary opera about conflict, love and hope.
Set in 1915 during the Gallipoli campaign, Women in War delves into the contrasting mindsets of three very different women - an Australian nurse keen to serve king and country, a Turkish mother in search of her wounded son serving in the Ottoman forces and a Greek war widow struggling to provide for her daughter on the Greek island of Lemnos, the ANZAC base.
Blending musical styles, rhythms, cultural nuances and emotions, the story unfolds in Lemnos and on the Gallipoli Peninsula and examines the often overlooked victims of war: those women left behind.
Women in War utilises a cinematic approach to storytelling and contemporises traditional opera form and structure. It is a story of prejudice, love, loss, grief and forgiveness and is an unmissable operatic experience marking the Anzac Centenary.
