Loop pedals? Check. Glitzy power-women? Check. Neo-soul Kylie Minogue covers? Check. Vanishing Act is a very 21st century cabaret about the very 21st century obsessions we have with success, fame and glory.
Co-devised by Melbourne performers Rosie Clynes and Candace Miles, Vanishing Act takes a look into why we are all so in it to win it, and so utterly terrified of vanishing into irrelevance. Driven by force, big personas and absurd comedy, the show is an episodic extravaganza that was created in response to the celebrated narratives of success we are so familiar with in our pop-culture sphere.
And being created for the 2016 Butterfly Club Spring Program and Melbourne Fringe Festival, it brings about a hazy neo-soul spin on the cabaret genre, with Miles and Clynes' backgrounds as theatre-makers and experimental musicians coming into play. "It's more Prince than piano standard," jokes Miles.
Bursting onto the scene as 2015 Victorian College of the Arts graduates, Clynes and Miles both presented sold-out shows at last year's Melbourne Fringe Festival and VCA's FRISK Festival of New Work. Clynes' show Smithereens received special mention from the festival programmers, whilst Miles' show Three Birds One c*ckwent on to tour in Adelaide Fringe to 4-star reviews and returned for a 2016 Melbourne season.
Vanishing Act opens on 27th September and runs for 6 shows only.
