Local Melbourne podcast group Unnatural Selection have launched a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo for their debut theatre production of Purgatorio in April 2016.
From playwright Ariel Dorfman, Purgatorio reimagines a classic Greek tragedy by taking two characters, a man and a woman, and holding them against their will in an unknown detention facility, asking them to repent their sins in the eyes of both their captors and the audience.
PURGATORIO will challenge its audience's preconceptions with issues at the forefront of both national and international politics, from mandatory detention, mass surveillance, the persecution of the "other" and the complexities of intimate partner violence.
Unnatural Selection is known for its weekly podcast featuring a humourous yet ruthlessly honest take on the world's news. In producing PURGATORIO, the group aims to use their background in theatre making to continue the podcast's ideal of having the hard discussion but in a dramatic context.
PURGATORIO's Indiegogo campaign is already live, and offers rewards to its backers ranging from tickets to the show, signed programs and a meet and greet with the cast/crew. The campaign aims to raise at least $700 by the end of March.
