This International Women's Day, Magnets & Friends, Levi's and The Curtin present a collection of powerhouse artists who are taking the music world by storm on a local and national level, all of whom encompass the diversity that IWD celebrates. This whole-venue event will take place after the IWD march, on March 8th at 7.30pm at The John Curtin Hotel. The event is proudly supported by Levi's, with proceeds going to Girls Rock!; whose goal is to give female, trans, non-binary and gender diverse youth empowerment through music camps and workshops.
The line-up will feature four live acts, a spoken-word artist and a stellar collection of DJs playing on both floors.
The evening will be going out with a bang with the formidable MISS BLANKS - this unapologetic force of nature who calls Brisbane home is taking stages across Australia by storm; most recently giving a string of dynamite performances on the Laneway Festival circuit. She is an outspoken ambassador for safe space and has been described as the new face of Australian hip hop. We can't wait to see her grace the Curtin stage and serve up some fire.
Our second interstate headliner is the ethereal RAINBOW CHAN, floating in from Sydney to charm us all. Rainbow recently won FBi radio's Song of the Year award for her single "Let Me" and unsurprisingly so; her brand of soulful and delicate multi-instrumental electronica is a rare gem. She combines the influence of her Chinese heritage as well as her love of flea-market finds to conjure up an experimental dreamscape that will leave a crowd feeling warm and gooey on the greyest of days.
Enter SIMONA - Musician. DJ . Producer. This Melbourne native barely needs an introduction, for this "one -woman industrial rave" has over 20 years in her back pocket immersing herself in the Melbourne club and live music scene, not to mention tours of AUS, USA and Europe to boot. Prepare to behold a bewitching, intelligent, and at times brutally confronting synth-pop performance from this incredibly accomplished artist.
Kicking off the eve is multi-talented glitter explosion, MAGNETS. With a background that boasts classical training, live improv comedy and a history of supplying backing vocals to many a melbourne band (e.g. Ali Barter, Sons of Rico, Shania Choir), this dynamo is no stranger to the stage. Nowadays transitioning seamlessly between keys, guitar and synth, she creates an infectious realm of FEMpop you can rock to.
We are also honoured to have JAZZ GIULIANI on board to perform poignant spoken word that peels back the surface to look deep into life's injustices and break them apart in the timeless form of storytelling. Jazz has been published in The Feminist Utopia Project (The Feminist Press), Page 17, Little Raven, The Australian Poetry Collaboration, Fead Magazine, amongst others.
On top of this high-calibre collection of live performances, DJ sets in the band room and the front bar will be brought to you by MOJO JUJU, MZRIZK, NKECHI ANELE (Saskwatch), BETH AQ and SHIMMY BARNES, all night long.
