The Butterfly Club kicks off October with a doppelganger birthday party, more from the Melbourne Fringe Festival, and memoirs of Bette Davis.

We're celebrating our 11th birthday this Sunday 3 October in typical eccentric style ... by hosting a doppelganger party.

There are various definitions of the term ‘doppelganger'. For the purposes of this celebration we're using the facebook-inspired one, whereby guests are invited to dress up as a celebrity they look like. Prizes are on offer and entry is free.

After 11 years of unlikely staying power as an independent, non-publicly funded venue in an ever-fluid Melbourne arts scene, 11 years of discovering & nurturing new talent, of hosting always fun and sometimes naughty parties and shaking ‘n stirring 100,000+ cocktails ... it's time to party. The Butterfly Club has also been the launching pad for the annual Short+Sweet Cabaret festival (now in its third year) and the just-concluded, wildly successful Melbourne Cabaret Festival.

Cocktail of the month
With three spooky shows and a Halloween theme party, for this month's cocktail special we couldn't go past the ‘ghoulish gripe'.

Be spooked with tales of pumpkin kings, bearded ladies and a bit of incest in Monsters In My Closet. Go on a hellish journey through the darkenEd Halls of the St Fiacrius Home For Wayward Children. Experience a cacophony of mayhem and madness, sex and violence, song and dance that is not for the faint of heart in Atrocity.

Then, on the night itself, bring your nightmares to life by costuming up and coming to our Halloween theme party. Prizes are on offer and entry is free. Join us from 6pm on Sun 31 October.

End-of-year parties
We're experiencing early Heavy Demand for end-of-year parties, so to book your event at one of Melbourne's most unique function venues do the smart thing and email your enquiry to butterflyfunctions@gmail.com

Our new functions and events coordinator James (pictured) can advise you how to create a memorable night, choosing from our unique offering of beverages, catering and roving performers. Or, combine your night with top quality shows, including:
- Sammy J and Randy (who together took out the Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show at the 2010 Melbourne International Comedy Festival)
- Stevl Shefn and his Translator Fatima (Winner Best Comedy 2010 Adelaide Fringe Festival, Nominee Golden Gibbo 2010 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, 2010 Moosehead Recipient)
- Psych student turned entertainer Simon Taylor
- Mike McLeish (best known for his portrayal of Paul Keating in Keating! The Musical and one-third of The Beautiful Losers)
- Anthony Menchetti (as seen on NBC's Last Comic Standing)
- And hear a juicy mix of songs and ideas wrapped up in a headband with Anyone for Tennis?

Looking ahead
Psych student turned entertainer Simon Taylor can teach you how to trick yourself into feeling happier, spot your lies and read your thoughts. He joins us 16 to 20 November, but there's a sneak preview on Sun 24 Oct.

Emily Taylor in
HELLO YOU

Fresh from This Is Not Art Festival and The Sydney Fringe, Hello You is back!

Taking the audience on a joyous adventure through the obsessive and the compulsive, the dark and the ambiguous, the desirous and the fallible, Hello You celebrates murky lust and desire in a unique, playful and often moving way.

Using a combination of covers, spoken word, circulated objects and original songs, Hello You spans the beginning, middle and end of a very particular performer / audience relationship.

Weird, compelling, and endearingly homemade, Hello You offers a unique take on cabaret form. Full of false starts, foibles and the fragilities that make us all human, Hello You is a peculiar, charming and vaguely violating experience.
