The Alias Project presents SURFACING, a new play by Tracey Mathers. This play will take you up close and personal to the illness depression. Who are the people who suffer from this disease and how does it affect those around them? Tracey is one of those people and this is part of her story. Communication is such an important factor in understanding depression but it is such a taboo subject. The stigmas surrounding this mental health issue keep it behind closed doors. It is time to open those doors. Four childhood friends have grown up sharing their dreams and realities. They are there for each other in good times and bad. When the bad times become too difficult and private to share, each of them cope in different ways. Facades can only be kept for so long before something gives way and reveals the pain inside.
Actress and new playwright Tracey Mathers (We Can Be Heroes), along with director Nathan Gilkes (Present Tense Theatre, Lyric Opera of Melbourne) challenges you to help break down the barriers between society and sufferers of mental health. “This play only scratches the surface of my story and those of the semi fictional characters I have created. I’m very lucky to have an incredibly supportive family.” For tickets and more information, visit: www.traceymathers.com
