After a sell-out season at the end of 2009 at Sydney Opera House, an 18 month Australia wide tour, a tour of New Zealand and a Helpmann Award for Best Contemporary Australian Concert, THE MAN IN BLACK is back, with Australian rock legend Tex Perkins taking to the stage as Johnny Cash for a strictly limited season at The Playhouse, Sydney Opera House from 10 to 22 April.

The tough, challenging life of the music superstar and his legacy of powerful hit songs will be brought to life with all the laid-back intensity of The Man himself, state press notes.  It’s a lethal combination when Australian rock royalty, Tex Perkins, takes to the stage to play one of the most influential American singer-songwriters of the 20th Century – Johnny Cash.  Tex Perkins, singer with the multi-ARIA Award-winning Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon and Ladyboyz, will lead The Tennessee Four in a night of magnificent music.

Written by Australian theatrical producer Jim McPherson (also writer of the smash hit show starring Rick Price, The John Denver Story: Take Me Home Country Road), who confesses to a 40-year fascination with the wildly unpredictable star, THE MAN IN BLACK is two hours of Cash’s greatest hits interwoven with the story of his rise to stardom, fight for survival and eventual redemption.

Straight out of the classic American songbook - Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line,Folsom Prison BluesSunday Mornin’ Coming DownGet Rhythm, A Boy Named SueHey Porter are just some of the more than 24 of Cash’s hit songs in the show.

Cash, who died in 2003, was one of America’s most influential country music stars, his output over a long career covered a range of genres, including rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll, blues, folk and gospel. He sold well over 50 million records in his lifetime and his music is still selling today.  Johnny Cash was dealt a very tough hand early in life, but through his music and dedication he became a legend throughout the world.
