As THE KURSK prepares for its two week season at La Boite from 1 September, playwright/actor Sasha Janowicz reveals big news.

"I hope it's not too early to say anything, but the Russian production of THE KURSK has just been approved. They will be beginning their rehearsals at the end of this month so at the end of the year there will be a Russian premiere of the play."

THE KURSK had its world premiere at Metro Arts in 2007 and went on to win three Matilda Awards - Best New Australian Play, Best Independent Production and Best Director. It tells the incredible true story of the ill-fatEd Kursk - a Russian submarine that mysteriously vanished in the Barents Sea in August 2000. The wreckage was eventually discovered on the bottom of the ocean with 23 survivors trapped inside.

The 9th anniversary of the Kursk submarine tragedy was commemorated on 12 August with a special performance at the Mackay Entertainment Centre. 118 people attended performance - the exact number of lives lost on the Kursk.

This reinvention of the 2007 hit production promises to be bigger and better than the original with a new and very intricate set and technical design. Directed by 2009 Matilda Award winning director Michael Futcher (THE WISHING WELL), THE KURSK stars 6-time Matilda Award winner Eugene Gilfedder (THE WISHING WELL).

Winner of three 2007 Matilda Awards:
Best New Australian Play
Best Direction
Best Independent Production
An inspiring true story of hope, courage and love.
On 12 August 2000, a Russian nuclear attack submarine mysteriously vanished in the Barents Sea during a naval exercise. When the sub is discovered 100 metres beneath the sea, Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Popov is under extreme pressure. If he doesn't act quickly, there'll be a nuclear disaster in the Atlantic.

This extraordinary play reveals the true story behind the ill-fatEd Kursk submarine. Australian Playwright Sasha Janowicz travelled to Russia to seek out the truth behind the controversy. He was sent an anonymous package - a submariner captain's uniform complete with medals. The Russians donated their time, artefacts and pieces of uniforms for the project. It was clear that the true story of The Kursk had to be told.

We meet the sailors, their wives, their friends and their families who wait as the rescuers fight against the impossible. Meanwhile the lives of their loved ones hang in the balance.

The Kursk is a thriller, a mystery and a love story.
